Are Cashew Apples Edible?

Cashew apples are the fruit that grows on the cashew tree and they are edible. They are typically eaten fresh, and they can also be used to make juice, jam, or wine. They have a sweet and slightly acidic taste, it’s similar to a blend of apple and pineapple.

In a cashew, the ovary develops outside the fruit, making it truly a false fruit, as fruits have seeds within, by definition. Botanically, the apple in cashews is what is called an accessory fruit, since they develop after the cashew seeds fully develop. Cashew nuts are either accessories or pseudo-fruits, meaning that they have not developed from a flowering ovary entirely. Cashews are used in various foods, and are known as much for their cooking properties as nuts.

Cashew Testas (known as Cashew Husks, Cashew Silk Shells) are used for supplementing animal feed, they may also be used for making dyes. Cashew nuts are either roasted or eaten raw, having been carefully separated from their toxic shells (fruit); chemicals from the liquid of the shell are extracted for making glues, lubricants, solvents, plastics, and antimicrobials. Cashew shell liquid (CNSL) or cashew shell oil (CAS Registry Number 800-7-24-7) is a natural resin with a yellowish luster found inside the honeycomb structures of the cashew shell, and is the byproduct of processing cashew nuts.

The cashew shell contains petroleum compounds which may cause cutaneous poison ivy-like dermatitis, mostly from the phenolic lipids, anacardic acid, and cardanol. These oils within the shell may leak to the cashew seeds, making raw nuts hazardous to eat, even once removed from their shell. It is a fact that the double-shell surrounding a raw cashew, which is technically a seed rather than a nut, contains urushiol, a resin that causes considerable skin eruptions, which is also toxic if consumed. Raw cashews must be processed, once dried in the sun and baked at a high temperature, to remove a toxin called urushiol, and to add flavourings, to make them fully safe for consumption.

Every member of the Anacardiaceae tree family (think sumac, mango, Peruvian chili, pistachio, poison ivy, and, yes, cashews) contains a chemical oil called urushiol in all parts of the plant, so cashews are never sold in their toxic shells, and are usually roasted at high temperatures to eliminate any remaining oils. The whole fruit of the cashew is not eaten due to the presence of toxic oil which leaks from the shell as soon as it is cracked. In fact, a cashew apple is perfectly edible, requiring no treatment or processing (a cashew nut has some nasty chemicals on the exterior, which must be removed through treatment, then what is left is scraped out physically of the nuts kernel). We tend to think of a cashewnut as being edible, but in reality, it is possible to eat a cashew fruit. One traditional way of eating this is in a tea. In Jamaica, it is commonly made into juice.

Cashew fruits are used in many ways, such as in curries, chutneys, jams, vinegars, liquors, candy, syrups, and juice…and are becoming increasingly popular with each passing year. Cashew fruit may also be eaten fresh, In West Africa, the apple of a cashew is typically plucked from a tree and eaten immediately. It is sweet, but slightly astringent. Young cashews can be eaten, while apples are sliced, blanched, dried, and then cooked as vegetables. While the green colored kidney-shaped shell goes to waste, mature cashew apples are edible, and they can be eaten raw or cooked in curries and jams, with large usage among peoples of India and Brazil.

The actual drupe, or stalk, is a kidney-shaped shell that contains edible cashew nuts, and is found on the ends of the apples. The cashew apple is the pear-shaped, succulent structure that holds the fruit in place, and is really a swelling blossom/fruit stalk (pedicel) called a hypocarp. The cashew seeds are found inside the green colored kidney-shaped shell, which is not edible because it contains the acidic corrosive substance, anacardic acid, together with the phenolic lipids and the hydroxycaranol acidic corrosive substance, anacardic acid.

The cashew-apple is glossy, reddish or yellowish, pear-shaped, soft, juicy, six to eight inches long, two to four inches wide; the seeds are surrounded by an oily, tough, oily hard shell, said oil is toxic, which causes allergic reactions in some. The stalks above the nuts develop into large, mango-sized, soft mango-like fruits (but taste is peculiar; certainly not a mango-like flavor). Rather than eating this alone–the apple of the cashew tree causes the mouth to become fuzzy–it is usually used in concoctions with other fruits and juices.

Do cashew apples taste good?

It has an astringent, sweet flavor with tropical fruit notes and a hint of bell pepper in its flavor notes. They are stringy and juicy in texture. If you can get past the astringency of this fruit, you’ll probably enjoy it. If you want to reduce the fibrous texture and the astringent flavor, the flesh is commonly sliced into thin pieces and sprinkled with salt.

What are cashew poisoning symptoms?

Cashew poisoning is a rare but potentially a serious condition caused by eating cashews that have been improperly processed. Symptoms of cashew poisoning include severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. If not treated promptly, cashew poisoning can lead to death. If you think you may have eaten poisonous cashews, seek medical attention immediately.

Are cashews poisonous raw?

Since they contain a chemical called urushiol, which is also present in poison ivy, really raw cashews should not be consumed. Urushiol is poisonous, and some people may experience a skin response if they come into touch with it. Although cashew kernels are sometimes marketed as “raw,” they have really been cooked. This gets rid of the poisons.
