How To Defrost Milk Safely
You can defrost regular or non-dairy milk without spoiling it in many ways. But the one method that is the safest and the best is the refrigerator method. Place your frozen milk in the fridge and let it defrost until liquid. But this can take up to 5 to 10 hours.
Thawing and Using Frozen Milk You can store frozen milk safely in the refrigerator for up to 6 months, but it is best used within 1 month of freezing.
Freshly expressed breast milk can be stored in the back of the refrigerator for up to 12 months, but breast milk is best used within six months. If you plan to use freshly expressed breast milk within 3-5 days, there is no need to freeze it.
Thawing under running water is the fastest way to turn breast milk into drinkable milk. Run a bottle or bag of frozen milk under hot water (up to 37 degrees Celsius or 99 degrees Fahrenheit) until the milk reaches a comfortable temperature. The easiest way to thaw frozen milk is to place it under warm water for a few minutes.
How to defrost milk?
When the water is warm, not hot, place the container of milk in the water to defrost. You can also use a large saucepan or bowl of cold water to thaw small containers of milk.
Do not defrost frozen milk using hot or lukewarm water, as the milk heats up on the outside and stays cold on the inside.
Cold tap water flowing from the milk container while standing in the sink is the fastest and safest way to thaw frozen milk.
The frozen milk container should be close to tap water temperature in about an hour, and in most places, the tap water is not hot enough to seriously shorten the shelf life of milk. This is because the outside of the milk thaws quite quickly while the inside is still frozen.
Milk frozen in freezer bags should be placed in a bowl in the refrigerator (in case the protective film breaks when the milk is thawed). If you need to thaw frozen milk faster at room temperature, place a freezer bag or container in a large bowl of warm water until it thaws. If you have a small amount of milk, like a cup or two, you can put a small amount under warm, non-boiling water until it thaws.
Do not defrost large quantities of milk in hot water, as the milk may overheat. Most milk still needs to be thawed in water or in the refrigerator. Defrosting milk in cold water is faster than in the refrigerator, but it may take several hours, depending on the size of the container.
If you don’t plan on using all the milk stored in the bag right away, or if you’re preparing bottles for later use and don’t want to wait to thaw in the refrigerator, you can thaw the milk in cold water. To thaw milk, place it in the microwave for about 10 minutes, or thaw it in the sink for a couple of hours.
After a few snacks, and you can get the milk you need, feel free to put the jug back in the refrigerator to continue thawing milk in cold conditions. Since milk can take a long time to defrost in the refrigerator, it’s best to take it out of the freezer a day or two before you need it.
You can store milk in the refrigerator for 3-5 days and move it to the freezer anytime before expiration. As long as the milk stays cold, you can keep the unused portion of the milk that won’t fit in the bottle in the refrigerator.
Whether you’re returning to work, going to the gym, or just want your partner to feed you so you can get some sleep, you can express your breast milk and save it for your baby when you’re not around.
Once a bag of breast milk has thawed, you can bottle it for refrigeration and consume it within 24 hours, or you can warm it up and breastfeed right away.

You can give your baby thawed breast milk straight from the refrigerator or warm it to room or body temperature. You cannot re-freeze thawed breast milk, so make sure you defrost the amount you really need and use it. If you absolutely must use the microwave because you are short on time, use the Defrost setting only and drink or cook with milk shortly after it has been thawed.
Should you defrost using a microwave?
The problem with defrosting liquids in the microwave is that the liquid can start cooking before it’s completely defrosted, so a certain amount of boiled and defrosted milk is mixed in. You can also thaw frozen milk in the microwave, but be careful because heating destroys the beneficial enzymes in the milk, making it less nutritious. Freezing frozen breast milk with boiled water has the same effect as heating it in the microwave.
You must use defrosted milk in the refrigerator within 24 hours of defrosting (which means no ice crystals) and within 2 hours of reheating. This is not the method you would normally choose, this is the method if you need to milk faster than 12 hours and you know you won’t be able to use all the milk you’ve defrosted.
While more research is needed to find out whether previously frozen milk that has been thawed can be refrozen and safely used, many experts recommend throwing away thawed milk that has not been used within 24 hours.

Because breast milk expands when frozen, store breast milk in 2-4 ounces. Portions will help keep the bag from overfilling (or defrosting more milk than needed for feeding). The easiest and quickest way to thaw the breastmilk you plan to use right away is to place the breastmilk storage bag in warm water, as this thaws and warms the breastmilk. The cream can be thawed separately from the water in the milk, so if it’s not fully thawed, you may notice it’s not as smooth as usual, but a quick shake or stir can help.
How Long Does it Take to Defrost Frozen Milk?
Take out the frozen milk and put it in the fridge until it is liquid again. It takes almost 12 – 15 hours for freezing milk to liquefy in the refrigerator. It depends upon the quantity of the milk. If the milk is in large quantity it will take a little longer to defrost.
How Long Does Frozen Milk last after Thawed?
The frozen milk that has been thawed can last up to 5 to 7 days in a fridge. You can use this thawed frozen milk in your soups to make them creamier and more delicious. It is advised not to refreeze thawed milk.
What Can You Do With Frozen Milk?
After being frozen, the texture of milk does not remain the same, and while you can drink this, it is more suitable for cooking, making smoothies, and baking. Also, if you want to restore its texture, you can shake, stir and beat it with a hand mixer.
