What Does Hibiscus Taste Like?
The taste of hibiscus is a bit sour and is very similar to cranberry. However, over-steeping can make it bitter. It can be eaten fresh as well as its dried leaves are used to make teas and refreshing drinks with loads of health benefits.
Hibiscus is one of my favorite additions to our blends because it gives our teas a beautiful red color and delicious acidity that hits the taste buds with flavor. Hibiscus is one of the best and most popular ingredients for fruit tea blends because it can deepen the flavor of the tea and give it a truly amazing color. Known around the world by dozens of different names, the hibiscus flower grabs attention with its beauty and tantalizes our taste buds when brewed into a spicy, tea-like drink. An almost sour tea with cranberry flavor, the taste of hibiscus tea is almost comparable to the beauty of hibiscus flowers.

Hibiscus flowers, known as sour tea, are harvested from the plant to make everyone’s favorite herbal tea. After drying the dried hibiscus petals, they can be mixed with other ingredients to make a flavored tea, or steeped in boiling water to make a traditional hibiscus tea with a floral sweetness.
Soak dried hibiscus petals in boiling water for a few minutes to make tea (and refrigerate them to make iced tea). This method will allow you to enjoy the taste of hibiscus. To make hibiscus syrup, drain the hibiscus and measure out the liquid; it will probably be about 3 1/2 cups or so. At this point, you have a hibiscus concentrate that can be used to make a simple iced tea or Jamaican water that can be supplemented with sugar to taste and water.
If you like strong tea, let it brew a little; if you prefer a weaker tea, steep a little less time. We recommend using about a teaspoon of tea for every six ounces of water and heating the water to a boil before steeping the tea leaves for about six minutes. After making your flower tea, let it cool in the refrigerator for a couple of hours and serve it cold, perhaps with a few ice cubes.
Put the crushed hibiscus flowers in a strainer or tea infuser (it’s easy with the Zest Paris cup tea infuser), then put it in a mug, also add a slice of ginger, and if you like a spicy tea, add boiling water into a cup. Cup submerge hibiscus in water, let hibiscus soak for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, remove used hibiscus (and ginger, if used) and discard, drink and enjoy, or add honey, sugar, or your favorite sweetener smell.

Experiment with different flavor combinations, such as adding mint leaves with hibiscus flowers, or adding hibiscus extracts to different tea blends. For a twist on traditional iced tea, try mixing iced hibiscus with lemonade for a sweet, tart summer treat. I enjoy drinking hibiscus iced tea as a healthy alternative to sugary sodas and adding to smoothies for a unique tropical and tart taste. Just mix hibiscus iced tea with sugar for a floral and refreshing drink on its own, and you can even add it to your favorite tropical punch for a new tart twist.
