Usually, recipes don’t require dark soy sauce. But if you need dark soy sauce and can’t go out to get it, you can use what’s available in your pantry. A good substitute is light soy sauce. For every cup of dark soy sauce, use 3/4 cup light soy sauce and 1/4 sugar or molasses.

For recipes that usually call for dark soy sauce, I would use light soy sauce in the recipe and then just add some sweetener, organic brown sugar or light brown sugar to the dish itself. Dark soy sauce is often used along with light soy sauce as light soy sauce and dark soy sauce taste great together, but a dark brown color of dark soy sauce is sometimes required, especially in restaurants where presentation is very important. If you want your dish to have a dark color, you might not get it with a regular sauce, but the taste will be similar.

How to make a substitute for soy sauce?

If you’re allergic to soy or gluten, consider Worcestershire sauce as a better substitute, then fish sauce. Fish sauce is ideal for gluten intolerance, but should be used with caution due to its high sodium content.
