Why are sweet potatoes hard to cut and how do you cut them?
Sweet potatoes are hard to cut as they consist of starch and sugar which makes them dense and durable. To cut them you should use a large chef’s knife and can make them softer even by placing them in cold water and boiling them for 30 minutes after which they should be much easier to cut.
The texture of the sweet potato makes it difficult to slice without turning the knife into a weapon or hurting yourself in the process. That’s enough to get rid of the toughness of a sweet potato…makes it a lot easier to cut potatoes.

Your potato should be soft enough for the knife to cut through the potato just as well as a regular potato. Since sweet potatoes are dense, you will need a knife large enough and sharp enough to make a clean cut, such as a 7-5/8 Petite Chef Knife. When slicing, use a large chef’s knife and feel free to put some of your weight on it.
|Kinds of potatoes||How to cut sweet potatoes|

Press the tip and press down, then you can move the pressure down and back to the handle of a large, sharp chef’s knife. You can use the top of a vegetable peeler and cut out some small reverse stitches, or use a pairing knife, insert the tip of the knife inside and cut through to finish the stitches.

Don’t just poke a few holes with a fork; use a large knife to cut about a third of the potato on both sides 8-10 times. If your potatoes are large, cut them in half lengthwise and then into half rings.
If you can’t find a stable side, cut off one side of the potato wedge to create a flat surface for the sweet potato to sit flat on. After peeling the potatoes, find a place on the potatoes where they can rest on the cutting board without rolling or swaying too much. Use a paper towel to wrap the mashed potatoes after cooking. Pierce potatoes a few times and wrap in paper towels.
One of the best ways to use this technique is when mashing it – it doesn’t need to be finely chopped and you’ll still add some liquid. It will be better if you keep in mind that the potatoes do not overcook due to a cutting error. Turning over can be the result of overcooking potatoes, adding too much milk, or not draining enough water from the boil.
The tip is that low temperatures can turn potato starch into sugar, and this makes the potato hard. It gets too cold there, which changes the cell structure of the potato and makes it hard in the center (even after cooking).
While storing raw sweet potatoes in the refrigerator can extend their shelf life, it should not be done because low temperatures can cause white spots on the hard core, making the potatoes tasteless, tasteless, and difficult to eat. There are a few ways to store raw cut sweet potatoes, but the best way is to keep them open in a cool, dry, dark, well-ventilated place so they don’t get wet and sprout.
If you plan to cut and store raw sweet potatoes, you want to choose a sweet potato that has a firm, smooth texture, skin and all, and one that is less likely to see bruises or blemishes. If you want to consider a durable knife for cutting sweet potatoes, raw potatoes, vegetables and other foods, you should consider a high carbon stainless steel blade and wooden handle.
The ideal potato knife can not only cut potatoes conveniently, but also allow you to have a professional potato cutting experience. It’s a Japanese knife, which means you can get perfect potato chips without a hitch. Unlike the New Star Foodservice 38408 which comes with a 5 blade option, the Sopito Professional Potato Slicer comes with only one blade.
The handle of the knife is made from pakka wood, which provides a secure grip when cutting hard-to-cut items in the kitchen. French fries require a blade of a different size than the one needed for potato slices or french fries. You want to make sure the strips or fries are relatively the same thickness and the same size so that they cook evenly.
If we want to boil sweet potatoes, we want to cut them into pieces small enough to cook them in a reasonable amount of time, but not so small that they fall apart during cooking. Roasting a whole sweet potato in the oven or dicing and roasting caramelizes the potato’s starchy flesh, making it sweeter and giving it a velvety texture. During cooking, the fire will evenly fry even the very core of thinner potatoes, making them hot and caramelized; while with fatty potatoes, the outer surfaces will be well done before the centers have had time to cook.
Soaking peeled, washed, and sliced fries overnight in cold water removes excess potato starch, which prevents the fries from sticking together and helps achieve maximum crispness. Punching holes in the potatoes will help the steam escape, which will hopefully prevent them from splattering all over the oven. Peeling the potatoes will help you remove all dirt and bacteria from the potatoes before you start cutting them.
Slash also allows the moisture to evaporate, so you won’t steam your potatoes and end up with watered-down results. If you peel a lot of potatoes by hand, you should definitely get yourself a good vegetable peeler to speed up the process. Parchment paper makes it easier to peel, but I find crisps taste much better when cooked right in the pan. You can store them in the refrigerator in plastic containers and bags if an airtight lid is used.
The microwave can only be used for a minute or two to reheat a potato in the microwave, depending on its size. Like carrots, sweet potatoes have smaller, denser molecules that make them harder to cut. I remember when my kids were little they loved mashed sweet potatoes and I cooked a lot for them.
