The biggest difference between Thai and Vietnamese, I believe, is that pho soup, a soup of boiling rice noodles, is more a Vietnamese dish, while pad thai, pad Thai, and pad naan are all Thai.

In Thai restaurants, typically, you will see the noodle dishes consisting of the fried noodles mixed with proteins, vegetables, and sauces. Other common dishes include Pho Noodle Soup, Banh Xeo Fried Pancakes, Phan Mi French Baguette Sandwich, Bun Cha Grilled Pork Dish, and Banh Cuon Pork Spring Rolls. Vietnamese dishes which are particularly popular include pho (chicken or beef broth with rice noodles), banh mi (pork buns and cured carrots and jimica), and spring rolls. Both dishes are usually served over rice noodles in a banh xeo, with garnishes of bean sprouts, basil leaves, lime slices, cilantro sprigs, jalapeno slices, and fried shallots.

Thai dishes that are particularly popular include green curry, Tom Yum (a fragrant soup that features chicken or shrimp as a protein), Pad Thai (a popular noodle dish), and Basil Fried Rice. You could describe Thai food as a more exotic take on Chinese food. The foods share a few characteristics, which often have a lot in common, including super-sweet flavors, but also salty or acidic flavors. You should try starting your meals off with a familiar taste, like a yellow curry with less-spicy noodles.
