Unfortunately, Subway tends to be in one of the gray areas in terms of pregnancy-friendly food safety.

While many of the sandwiches at Subway are safe for consumption, pregnant women should avoid sandwiches that contain deli meat. Pregnant women are advised to avoid sandwiches with deli meat, which includes cold cuts such as turkey, ham, and roast beef–so, it seems like you are going to need to shave the cold cuts out of your diet for quite some time. Understandably, it is not uncommon to continue eating your sandwich without having your meat from the deli heated, particularly in places as convenient as Subway, or just because you did not realize that it needed heating first. Heating deli meat is just one step in mitigating an already low risk, and just because you ate a couple non-heated sandwiches from Subway does not mean that you are going to contract Listeria, or have done something bad for your child. Since you cannot test Subway for the presence of Listeria, heating is an easy choice that will remove a lot of the risks associated with eating out at Subway. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, you should never leave perishable foods, including Subway sandwiches, out longer than 2 hours. More than two hours is reduced to an hour if temperatures are over 90F, because warmer temperatures could make your Subway sandwiches unsafe to eat.

If your Subway sandwich has been sitting at room temperature for more than two hours, you should not be eating it, as this could make you sick. It is not recommended that you heat up your frozen Subway sandwich, as this may grow unwanted bacteria and ruin the sandwich.

Once purchased, you can store your Subway sandwiches in the refrigerator up to three days, or you can freeze it in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag, where it will keep up to three months. Freezing the remaining sandwiches helps prevent bacteria infections, but the texture will change and they might not be edible.
