Fresh asparagus goes sour pretty easy, but usually you will know when it is spoilt and is not any good for eating anymore. You can tell whether or not your frozen asparagus has gone bad using many of the same methods that you used for your fresh asparagus. Yes, you can freeze asparagus, but it is worth noting that you will notice a texture change with frozen asparagus when you thaw it.
If you notice large, blackened spots on your asparagus stems, it is best to dispose of that asparagus because it has gone bad. If your asparagus has been discolored, it is also a sign of bad asparagus. As with many other vegetables, if any of your asparagus stems develop a bad tack, those bad spots can be cut off and discarded. For when you notice that the tips of asparagus are starting to turn brown and get black spots, you can cut the tips (even if it is the best part) off and still use the stalk.

The tips are the most desired part of asparagus, so if the tips are turning a darker green or black, then they are going to go bad. The best way to tell if your asparagus is going bad is to look at the tips, they will start turning very dark green (almost black) and if you touch them, they will simply melt in between your fingers. If on touching the tips, the tips feel mushy, then the asparagus is likely to have gone bad. If the rest of the stalk is still whole, then you can trim off the tips and prepare the rest of the asparagus. You can trim off the tips right now and prepare the asparagus, or else, soon, the stalks too will become slimy and mushy, making them unusable, since your asparagus has gone bad and can start to form mould. Cooked asparagus is pretty limp in both cases, so it is not going to make that big a difference if you started out with slightly limp stems. Another way of cooking asparagus is to steam it, which is a wonderful way of cooking the vegetable if you want to make it tender and squishy. Of course, you cannot use limp asparagus in dishes where the crispy texture is needed; it will work fine in soups or stews.

When asparagus is going bad, the stalks will begin to look like they are going limp, and they are shaped like a spaghetti noodle. You can pull apart the less-edible, woody stalks from the more delicate parts of the asparagus by holding an asparagus stalk at the bottom and bending the stalks slightly, working up, until you get to a place where the stalks will snap as you bend them. Generally, a good asparagus stalk will have some give when you bend it, so you know that there is still some moisture in there. A foul odor coming off the asparagus will not be the only indication it is been spoiled, and if you noticed that there was a foul odor coming off of your asparagus, then it is more than likely you are seeing other signs of spoiledness, like spongy stems or dark, blackened tips.
This could be difficult, as you are likely not going to see signs of this being spoiled like you do for something like fruit. If your asparagus looks much different from when you bought it in the grocery store, it is probably not good. If your asparagus has gone bad, then it is going to have a bad, odorous taste, and most likely also has one or two, if not all, of the other attributes of bad asparagus we went over above.
