How To Cook Rice For One Serving In Microwave

To cook rice for a single serving in a microwave, place 1/2 cup of uncooked rice in a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and wrap it with plastic wrap with holes. For 5 mins, let it cook on high, then for 2 mins on half power. and let it sit for 5 mins. Serve hot.

Add the cooked rice to a microwave-safe bowl or microwave-safe rice cooker with 1 tablespoon of water per cup to reheat the rice. To reheat rice from the refrigerator, I usually add a few teaspoons of water, cover the rice, and microwave each cup of reheated rice for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Here’s the water and cooking time that comes with my microwave rice cooker, and it works for me with a cup or two of (strong) rice:

Add 1 cup and 2 tablespoons of water to the measuring cup of dry rice (or 2 cups and 4 tablespoons of simmering 2 cups of rice) and toss gently.

How much water do you need for reheating rice in a microwave or rice cooker?

If the 1 cup of rice has holes, steam has come out, and most of the water has evaporated from the microwave-safe dish, you’re ready to go to the next step.

During this process, the water will be hot enough to steam the rice, and the microwave will cook the rice from the inside out. If there is still water, microwave in one-minute increments until a bowl of raw rice is fully cooked with steam holes. After preparing a bowl of raw rice with water, place the plate in the microwave uncovered and microwave on full power for 10 minutes.

Continue reheating uncooked rice in the microwave in 1-minute increments, check if it’s done, and repeat if it’s still not up to par. You can instantly reheat Golden Ratio Rice for 5 minutes at maximum power or gradually cook it for 15 minutes at 50 percent or half of your microwave’s available power levels.

The 5-minute rice route

If you can’t set your microwave’s power level, it’s always on high power, so follow the 5-minute rice route. Check the power of your microwave – you may need to control the rice gradually and add or subtract time (more on this below). Adjust as needed for higher or lower microwave power and to cook more than one cup of rice, as it will take longer for the water to boil.

Cooking times vary from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the type and amount of rice you’re cooking and the power of your microwave.

While you can use the same basic method to cook different types of rice, the cooking and rice/water ratios will vary. The overall rice/water ratio depends on the cooking method and the type of rice used. After a lot of torturing in the kitchen, I’ve found that these ratios work best for me with a variety of rice grains.

The perfect biryani method

This method is similar to how to make perfect biryani rice, except we add all the spices to the biryani and drain when the rice is 80% cooked.

Steps:

  1. Rinse the dry rice thoroughly three to four times, add fresh water, stir the dry rice with your fingers, drain and change the water until completely clear
  2. Remove the covered bowl and make a hole in the foil lid to stir the rice, then remove the rice and let it sit for a few minutes
  3. Microwave. Return the bowl to the microwave and cook at 400W for seven minutes.
  4. Carefully remove a large microwave-safe bowl using oven mitts or towels and peel the shells off the rice to ensure it cooks evenly
  5. After another 4 minutes, remove the rice and immediately transfer it to a second bowl so the rice “breathes”, and excess steam emerges
  6. After another 4 minutes, remove the rice and immediately transfer it to a second bowl so the rice “breathes”, and excess steam emerges
  7. Once the cooking cycle is complete, let the rice sit covered for 3 minutes to improve its consistency.
  8. Bring the medium saucepan back to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer, covered, for 18 minutes, or until the rice is soft and the water has been absorbed
  9. Place the rice and boiling water* into a small saucepan with a lid (or use a saucepan and aluminium foil)
  10. Cover, cook at 200°C/390°F (180°C with ventilation) for 35 minutes; remove from the oven and leave for 10 minutes. Marvel at the perfectly cooked soft baked rice.

To be more specific, you can use the lid provided on the bowl with the lid slightly open or transfer the uncooked rice to a microwaveable container with its own lid. Place the bowl back in the microwave and cook at maximum power for another 3 minutes until all the water has been absorbed and the rice is dry.

Notes: I use heat-resistant glassware with a lid, but you can use any glass or ceramic lid that fits snugly. Measure 1 cup of rice and place it in a microwave-safe dish – you’ll need one that holds at least 1.5 litres when cooking this rice.

To rinse it properly, swirl uncooked rice in cold water until it turns into a white, cloudy slurry, similar to skim milk. Anyway, I liked the microwaved rice, and this rice also needs to be rinsed and soaked at least 30 minutes before cooking.

In our case, it took 3 minutes at 800W, but the goal is to cook at full power until the water reaches the bottom of the container and then stop.

For us, it was 3 minutes at 800 watts, but the bottom line is you want to cook on full power until the water boils down to the bottom of the microwaveable plastic wrap and then stop.

Do not close the lid tightly, as the lid may explode due to the accumulation of steam inside the bowl during cooking. Refer to your microwave oven’s instruction manual to adjust the power level. The boiling time of water depends on the power of the microwave oven.
