How Much Rice Should You Cook Per Person?
While the serving size for rice varies from person to person, most experts agree that an average person needs a cupful of cooked rice. Still confused? Remember that rice doubles as it’s cooked — if you cook half a cup of rice, it will increase to be a whole cup when fully prepared.

Rice is usually cooked with 1-1/2 cups of water to 1 cup of rice, according to package directions. As a reminder, if the rice is the main dish, you need a cup of rice per person, and if the rice is a side dish, you need half a cup of rice per person. As a general guideline, the average serving size for steamed or boiled rice is 1/2 cup when serving as a side or side dish for protein, or 1 cup when serving as a main course or vegetable. One cup of dry rice makes half a pound of rice, which is four if the meal also includes a main course and at least one other side dish.
When cooking 1/3 cup dry rice, it is about 1 cup white rice. This means that the average person should be able to eat 1/3 cup of a certain brand of white rice unless it’s pre-cooked (which should be 2/3 cup of cooked rice). If you have a group of 30 people and everyone eats rice as their main carb, your goal should be to make about 30 cups of rice, which requires about 15 cups of uncooked rice. If you serve rice as a side dish, 1/2 cup of rice per person, this is how much uncooked rice is needed for 1 person and for 2, 4 and 6 people.

Usually, rice doubles in volume when cooked, which means you should halve the amount of rice you’re about to eat in order to calculate how much uncooked rice you need. We’re talking about raw rice here, so when it’s cooked, you’ll get a cup per person because the rice doubles in volume when it’s cooked. Rice gets bigger as it cooks, which means 1/2 cup of uncooked rice might not seem like much, but it should be enough when cooked. Need means if you are serving plain rice with meat and vegetables (no bread or heavy meals as a side dish for potatoes), the amount of rice per person is 1 cup.
Necessity means that if you’re making the adult-recommended serving of one cup of rice, you’ll need two cups of water or broth. The indicated amount of water must be added to the pot, covered with a lid and brought to a boil (for each cup of rice, there are from 2 to 212 cups of water). The rule for white rice is to double the amount of rice to get the required amount of water, then one cup of rice and two cups of water. It’s important to note that different types of rice require different cooking times, but I also need a little more water.
|Fried Rice||1/2 to 1 cup of cooked rice per person|
|Vegetable Rice||If you will serve this rice as a side dish, |
you need 1/2 cup per person
|Biryani||250 grams in a cup makes 2 servings of rice|
You may need to change this slightly depending on the type of rice you are cooking. Make sure you use a pot large enough to hold the rice while it cooks and expands to make sure you can double or triple the recipe. If you’re eating rice along with other carbohydrates, or with lots of protein and vegetables, you can cut it down to about half a cup. If a group of 10-14 people eat 1 serving of rice, that should be more than enough.
You can always make a little more, about 4 cups, so everyone gets the portion (or more) they want. You might consider doubling the number of cups for 4-6 people, which is 1.5-2.5 cups of rice. As a side note, 250 grams of rice in a cup is about 1 1/3 cups, about 2 servings of rice. Typically, a 1-cup (80-gram) serving is only good for white rice, as it is more processed than wild or brown rice.
All cooked rice such as brown rice, white rice, jasmine rice and basmati rice have the same volume, so how many spoonfuls do I serve per person. For a larger main course, 100g / 3.5oz (half US cup) uncooked rice per person would be a good serving, which would yield approximately 300g / 10.6oz (1.5 US cup) cooked rice. If you have an American cup or a measuring cup with American cups, half a cup of uncooked rice equals one large serving per person. Try one cup (the one that comes with the rice cooker, no measuring cup size) raw for every two people.
Half a cup of rice is also suitable if you’re serving a high-carb meal, such as couscous or pita bread. On average, an adult’s side dish is half a cup of rice, which is also an ideal amount if you’re feeding your child rice as the main carbohydrate in a meal. If cooking for children, the amount of rice is obviously less. If you cook less than a cup of rice, it can be difficult to get the right water ratio for a small portion of rice.
When cooked, 1 cup of rice rises to 2 cups of rice due to moisture absorption and the cooking process. These figures are based on an average of 75g/2.6oz (wet) per person and large servings of 100g/3.5oz (wet) per person, and show that the amount of rice will roughly triple when cooked.
75 grams of uncooked brown rice weighed 175 grams, 2.3 times its original weight. Main course – 1 serving of rice = 1 cup (cooked) If rice is part of the main course, as is the case with Spanish rice, jambalaya, as a base for beef stroganoff, or if rice salad (see my recipe) is the main course, allow 1 cup boiled rice per person. Rice should be served in 1/2 cup portions, about the size of a cake wrapper.
