How Much Rice Is 1 Serving

The serving size of rice depends upon the meal it’s being served with. If rice will be served as a side dish, the typical serving size for 1 person is 1/2 cup of uncooked rice. But if rice is the main dish, 1 serving size is 1 cup of uncooked rice.

It’s easy to work out how much rice you need per serving if you follow a few simple steps. As a reminder, if rice is the main dish, you need one cup of rice per person, and if the rice is a side dish, you need half a cup of rice per person. If you have a group of 30 people and everyone eats rice as their main carb, your goal should be to make about 30 cups of rice, which requires about 15 cups of uncooked rice. If you only want to make 2 servings or 1 cup of rice, you will need 1/3 cup rice and 2/3 cup water.

When cooked properly, a serving of rice only requires a cup of water and a teaspoon of butter. The same ratio will not give you the fluffy texture that long grain rice is known for if you cook it with 1 cup of uncooked short grain rice. The first thing you need to know is the water to rice ratio and you want to use two cups of water or liquid to one cup of uncooked long grain rice if you are making plain white rice. You know the right ratio of liquid to rice to use for good results, and you can use that information and experiment until you get the perfectly cooked rice you want for all your meals.

To make sure you have enough rice, cook 1 1/2 cups of uncooked rice for 3-4 people and 2 cups of uncooked rice for 4-6 people.

Once cooled, the rice becomes dry, making it ideal for use in fried rice. To reheat for serving (e.g. for (e.g. french fries or curry), drizzle 2 teaspoons of water over 1 cup of cooked rice, cover with a lid or cling film and microwave – the water will be damp again. Leave the covered cup of white rice on the stove for a few minutes after it becomes soft so that it finishes absorbing all the water and then peel it with a fork to get good rice and… well, soft.

You can easily double or even triple the recipe; just make sure you use a pot big enough for the rice while it cooks and puffs up. If you eat rice and other carbs, or are high in protein and vegetables, you can reduce it to about half a cup. The same rules apply if you serve brown or wild rice, but the finished dish may be slightly lighter. If you’re serving a variety of carbohydrate foods, such as couscous or pita, half a cup of rice is also suitable.
