How Much Does Tofu Cost

When dealing with tofu purchased from stores, the best thing to do is generally refer to the dates mentioned on the package. Temperature and cross-contamination are the biggest factors when it comes to storing your tofu correctly. These storage conditions are also dependent on whether you wish to keep your tofu long-term or short-term.

Whichever method you decide on for proper tofu storage, be sure that you are using either an airtight container or reusable sealed bags at all times. If you open up a package of plain or silken tofu, and cannot immediately use all of the contents, then this is how you will want to store it.

IngredientsAmount
Tofu15oz
Sesame oil, chives, sliced avocado, cucumber, and radishes1 tsp
Soy sauce and shelled edamame3 tsp
Rice1 cup
Chile onion crisp1 tsp
Ingredients required to make tofu.

Once you freeze your tofu, you can put it into labelled Ziploc bags and keep in the freezer up to three months. If you keep open tofu any longer than 3 – 5 days, then you are essentially welcoming every potential possibility for food contamination and food poisoning.

Tofu will provide you with as much protein and nutrients as any other legume-based product, but is far easier to digest. With 8g protein, this product is a bit on the low side in terms of satiation, although it does offer a cheaper alternative than higher protein alternatives. Silken tofu has about half of the calories and fat, whereas Firm tofu has over double the protein. Although tofu comes in many textures–silken, firm, and extra-firm–anyone can eat it raw.

Cooked, the firmer tofu will develop a chewy, meaty texture, which is ideal for dishes such as a spicy Mexican chile. Make sure to use firm tofu or extra-firm, as the soft varieties will break up during the stir-fry process. If you are going to chop up tofu to use in stir-fries, go with firm or extra-firm varieties, as soft tofu will break up when stirred often while cooking.

Extra Firm Organic Sprouted Tofu comes in two packages, and is less firm than Extra Firm Sprouted. Extra Firm High Protein has a tight, solid texture that can be easily mistaken for meat. Water-soaked tofu typically costs about $2 per kilogram, and it can be considerably cheaper than meat, and a little bit more expensive than dried beans, while also being a higher-quality protein source. Traditional tofu packed in water is tough to market, and it is baked and other pre-made options that are making more inroads at Nasoya and Hodo, which are increasingly focused on Middle American cuisines and appealing flavors like Mexican and Moroccan. Tofu and canned beans are comparably nutritious foods, much quicker and easier to make than cooked dried beans. For instance, boneless chicken breasts average $3.27 per pound nationwide, whereas tofu costs $2.50 to $2.50 per pound, and dried beans are about $1.39 a pound.

Even in Japan, which is among the most expensive countries in Asia, you can purchase quality tofu for less than a quarter the price you would pay in Western countries. Minh Tsai, the CEO of Hodo Foods, which turns about 10 million pounds of soybeans annually into tofu products, believes that cost is one of the factors that has helped to fuel the growth in the popularity of tofu. It is the one piece covered by subsidies, and making tofu means fewer revenues for soy farms.

The only rational explanation I can think of is that tofu/tempeh/etc is a niche more than anything else, and thus the scale affects cost effectiveness. This apparent scaling could either be the result of lax kitchen management, or a consequence of tofu being stored for longer periods.

Instead of reaching for those processed vegetablechicken nuggets, a cheap, healthier, and, personally, tastier secret for staying on budget on a vegetarian or vegan diet is tofu. While you can easily purchase fresh silken tofu in Japan, you will likely find it only in specialty tofu shops in Western countries.

How is tofu made?

It’s a fascinating process, and it all starts with soybeans. The soybeans are soaked in water and then ground into a paste. The paste is then mixed with coagulants, which help to turn the soy milk into curds. The curds are then pressed into blocks, and that’s how tofu is made!

Is tofu healthy?
