We dug through our giant box of onions in our kitchen pantry, picking out some sample onions.
For our testing sample, we chose a medium yellow onion, between 2-3.25 inches across. Onions classified as medium are those that are between 2 and 3.25 inches in diameter. The onions categorized as large are those having their diameter of 3 inches or larger. On our grocery store shelves, the largest onions, classified as super-large by the National Onion Association, are typically 4 to 6 inches across, weighing around one pound.

We are not aware of any standard sizes or charts of the products, but from the previous Nigella recipes, we would estimate that the largest onions are around 225-275 grams (8-9 oz). A medium onion would be smaller than that, around 150-170g (about 6 ounces), and a small onion about 125g (4 1/2 ounces) or less. A medium shallot would weigh just about 1 ounce, which will produce about 1/4 cup of chopped onions. If a recipe calls for 1 cup finely ground onions, that would require about 3 medium large onions, or if you want larger chopped sizes, then about 2 would work.
Next time a recipe calls for a cup of chopped onions, you will be sure to know how many different types of onions you will need.
