All onions have almost the same weight range regardless of whether they are yellow, red or white in color. Thus approximately a large, yellow onion would weight seven to eight ounces (at least 225 grams), a medium-sized yellow onion would weigh six ounces (150 grams), and a small-sized yellow onion would weigh four ounces (125 grams).

If your recipe calls for a cup of diced onion, you should feel confident buying a medium-sized onion, which is roughly the size of a navel orange. If you do not have a scale and are left guessing at onion sizes, knowing how many cups of chopped onions are the equivalent of a medium onion is useful. Next time a recipe calls for one cup of chopped onions, you will be more confident knowing how many of each kind you will need.

Learn about the difference between yellow and white onions

Recipes often call for one small, medium, or large onion with no guidance on the number of cups of chopped onions that those sizes should produce. When you are cutting onions, you will have to keep in mind that the roughness of the slices, along with their shape, will impact the number of onions you will be able to pack into one cup.
