How Long Is Grated Parmesan Cheese Good For After Opened
Parmesan cheese is good for about 3 months once it is opened. Cheese loses its flavor after this time. You should always store it in an airtight container away from heat and sunlight if you want to preserve the freshness of your cheese. Unopened, the parmesan should last about 7 to 9 months.

If you purchase Parmesan in blocks, the best way to store it is by wrapping it tightly in wax paper, foil, or zip-lock bags, and keeping it refrigerated. Parmesan is kind of a tough cheese that keeps fairly long, and properly stored, Parmesan cheese can stay edible for a fairly long period of time. There are occasions where you cannot use it right away after buying it, and have to preserve it in order to use it later. It is best to use the Parmesan right away once the package is opened (especially once the Parmesan is ground to a powder).
It is a common question whether Parmesan should be treated like other cheeses when coming into contact with refrigeration. Also, and generally, since Parmesan is a dry, hard cheese, with a very low water content, the “use-by” date is almost always much shorter than the actual amount of time that the cheese will last, once again, provided it is stored properly. As a general rule, harder cheeses, like Cheddar, processed cheeses (American), and both blocks and grated Parmesan, require no refrigeration to keep safe, but harder cheeses, like Cheddar, will keep longer if kept refrigerated. For cheeses like Parmesan and mozzarella to remain fresh and enjoy their longest shelf lives, they are best stored at their curing temperatures.
Meanwhile, harder cheeses such as Parmesan, Swiss, and Cheddar can be saved by cutting off areas of mold. For Parmesan and other hard cheeses, you can cut off the parts that have molded spots, storing the remaining pieces for eating.
The same techniques work with refrigerated or unrefrigerated grated Parmesan, as well as how Parmigiano-Reggiano should be stored. You can freeze a block of Parmesan for quite some time, provided that you pack it tightly into a freezer-safe bag or another freezer-safe container, such as those found on Amazon.

If you decide against taking the Parmesan out of the freezer for an extended period, then you will want to keep it in a refrigerator. If the Parmesan is unrefrigerated, it should be stored in the refrigerator, where it should be kept for a few months before going bad. For a couple of days, you can store Parmesan even at room temperature, but remember, refrigerator is always a better option. You can prolong its shelf life further by freezing it, and can store frozen, ready to be pulled from the freezer, for up to 18 months.
You can also keep your grated Parmesan in a freezer in plastic freezer bags, where it can last easily from about 12-18 months. Even more amazing, if your cheese is kept cold during transport and when sold at a supermarket, it may last 10-12 months. If the firm cheese is sold refrigerated, with its package unsealed, then it can still be eaten for one week past its expiration date.

A solid piece of cheese will remain fresh for nine months if not opened, or six weeks when opened in a refrigerator. If a fresh piece of cheese is still unopened and still in its original package, it may keep for 3-4 weeks at room temperature, but will keep more like 6 months when kept refrigerated.
