A package of ground beef can stay in the fridge for up to two days from the date of purchase. Ground beef must be frozen if you want it to stay fresh for longer. When kept in the freezer, ground beef and other ground meats will last for three to four months.

Like any leftovers, cooked meats last in the fridge three to four days, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Leftovers that include cooked meats should last no longer than three to four days before throwing them away. Although cooked meat has longer shelf life than uncooked meat, it only keeps up to four days in the fridge and three months in the freezer before going bad. To prevent food poisoning, throw away raw meat once it is past its expiration date, or if you suspect that it is going bad.

Be sure to never leave the package out for more than 2 hours on the counter, otherwise, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria or other germs. That is, try and use your meat within 2 days after purchasing and properly store in a refrigerator, wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. You can keep ground meat in the freezer up until your use-by date, as long as it is not opened and is still in good shape. If you have already opened the original package, you can transfer the ground beef into a freezer-safe bag and mark the date.

Before placing any beef in the freezer, mark with date, the name of the cut of beef, and weight or servings. If you bought a large bag of ground beef at a grocery store, then it is important to split this up into smaller portions, putting those that you will use in your refrigerator wrapped in plastic bags, and keeping the rest in your freezer. You can either keep ground beef in the original package in the freezer, or wrap the meat in plastic wrap before placing in a sealed container.

Long-term storage of beef will make it sour, smell foul, and feel sticky. Cooking may eliminate the bacteria and moulds that inhabit it, but will not remove the toxins and spores they leave behind in the degraded meat.

Brown meat, no matter what color, is as safe to consume as red meat, no matter how long it is been stored. If you checked the storage times for other types of meat, you would discover their safe storage times could be far longer.
