This actually depends on the type of pasta youre using and its size. For instance, linguine and spaghetti  takes up to eight to ten minutes to cook while bow or penne pasta take ten to twelve minutes as theyre shorter and thicker whereas ravioli takes three to five minutes as it is fresh pasta.

To prepare the pasta, simmer in plenty of water in a large pot with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon olive oil. When you are ready to bake the pasta, simply add it to the boiling water and let it sit there for one to two minutes. Once water starts boiling, and you have added your pasta to the water, you will want to take off the lid to keep the water from bubbling.

I leave the water hot, so that I can get the water to a quick boil just as I have to add the pasta. Add the pasta, all at once, into the water, and keep the heat on high so that you can get the water back to the boil as fast as you can. Once the pasta has returned to the boil, lower the heat to medium-high or high, to prevent the pan from boiling over while the pasta is cooking. If you cover the pasta with the lid as it is cooking, the macaroni will not cook quite as well, because you need to reduce the heat just enough to keep water from boiling over the pan or bubbling.

Once the pasta is added, the water will lower from a full boil to a slower simmer. Bring water to a full boil, or rolling boil, before adding the spaghetti or noodles. For firmer pasta, bring the water to a rolling boil before spooning the pasta into it.

You want the intense heat from boiling water to set the outer part of the pasta, preventing it from sticking. In general, the larger your batch of pasta, the more water you need to use, so that you do not get too many lumps in your pan. A pot that is too small, with too little water, will cause perfectly fine pasta to cling together and bind, and therefore to be cooked unevenly.

This is why the quick boiling is so important; water temperature drops as the pasta is added, but if you are boiling quickly, water will still be warm enough to allow pasta to cook just fine. Once you actually add the noodles to the pan, the water temperature drops slightly. Once the water is boiling, and you have put your noodles in the pan, you want to simmer for about 10-15 minutes. If you made your noodles with fresh noodles, you might just have to simmer for one to two minutes, or occasionally for three.

Fresh pasta will be cooked by the time your water gets to its second boil, so be sure you are not overcooking. It is harder to cook fresh than dry, so hold off on that until it is dried out.

Make sure you add salt at the time that salt has had time to dissolve into water, and plenty of time for the cooking paste to properly flavour. Always add salt along with water, so that the pasta will soak up the flavor of the salt as it cooks. When draining your pasta, reserve one cup of cooking water for adding sauce.

The proper way to sauce a macaroni is to add the noodles after draining into the sauce, and to warm it up a bit over low-heat heat for several minutes. Once your cooked pasta is about one minute from being fully cooked, remove it from the water using a slotted spoon and add to the pot with the sauce. Because the pasta will continue to cook even further as you add the hot sauce, it is important that you do not overcook it in boiling water. Follow the tips above and you will cook your pasta like a pro, without adding any oils to your water.

Take your pasta off the burner and throw it in the cold water to stop the cooking process. Immediately rinse pasta in cold water to arrest the continued baking of pasta noodles. Remember, once the pasta is dropped into the water, it will chill down the water temperature.

If using pasta in salads, put it into a strainer and wash it under cold water for about 1 minute, stirring to keep it cold. Do not rinse the pasta, because the starch helps sauce stick to the pasta. You may want to adjust your heat to prevent your pasta/water mixture from foaming over the sides of your pan.

It is fine to cover the pan when trying to bring the water to boil, but not once you have added the pasta. If you are used to adding oil to prevent water boiling over, use instead a pot big enough to very comfortably hold the required amount of water and the pasta (I typically use a pot that is 8-9 quarts for one pound of pasta. As described earlier, fill a pot with six quarts water, bring to the boil, add the salt, then dry out your pasta.

Simply pull one chunk of pasta from pot, and put it on cutting board to cool a bit. Dump the pasta in the strainer you have in your sink, giving your pasta a bit of shake.

Return the pasta to the pan with sauce (or into the pan if sauce is still cooking and pan is big enough), add one to two cups of water, and stir to evenly coat. Drain your pasta about 1 to 2 minutes ahead of time (allowing a little of the pasta water to remain on your pasta) and mix into the sauce in the pot. Add to hot sauce, let it finish cooking a minute or two, until it is al dente.

Remove it from the oven and allow the baked macaroni to rest, ununcovered, for 15 minutes before serving. Then, place the dish back in the oven for an additional 5 minutes, as per instructions in the pasta box. If it does not, then remove from the heat approximately two to three minutes before the baking time most pasta packages actually give.

Add all ingredients, including vegetables or meat, and the dried pasta, and allow it to simmer until all ingredients are cooked, typically in about 20 to 25 minutes. If making homemade gravy, it is always smart to set aside some of the cooking water from your pasta before straining out your noodles. Because hot or warm water evaporates when heated and cooked, waiting until just before you are ready to add your pasta will make sure that your ratio of salt to water is right.
