How Long Do Onions Last?
Whole onions can last for up to three to four weeks if stored at room temperature or pantry. For peeled onions, they can be kept for up to 12 to 15 days in the refrigerator. However, if they are sliced, they must be consumed within 10 days.
The shelf life of an onion depends on how it is stored, its age, and whether it is whole, sliced, or cooked. As discussed earlier, storing cooked onions is a must to keep them fresh and usable for three to five days. When you store cooked onions in the refrigerator, placing them in a suitable container will keep them in good condition for three or five days. However, if you don’t have enough room in the fridge and storing the onions at room temperature is your only option, whole raw onions can last two to four weeks at room temperature.

If you don’t have a pantry, cellar, or garage, onions are best stored in the refrigerator, where they keep for up to two weeks, or at room temperature, where they keep for about a week. Storing chopped onions in the freezer can extend their shelf life by 5-8 months, but once thawed, they will become soft and mushy. Chopped onions have an even shorter shelf life and can be refrigerated for about 1 week before their quality begins to deteriorate.
The whole bulb will keep for up to 3 months if stored in a cool, dry and dark place, preferably a storage room. A whole onion usually lasts up to six weeks when stored on the counter, but can last up to two months when refrigerated. Do not use the refrigerator to store whole onions unless you are storing green onions or scallions. Diced, sliced or chopped onions should also be stored in the refrigerator.

If you really need a steady supply of diced or diced onions for your soups, casseroles, and stews, you can store the cut slices in the freezer, where they’ll stay in great shape for three to six months.
