Eggs may last for several hours if they are kept unrefrigerated. You should refrigerate them for a longer period of time in order to preserve the eggs. You may also increase the shelf life of the eggs by freezing them. Make sure that you should pack them in an airtight container.

Your eggs should last about two weeks on the counter, but they may last as long as four when kept refrigerated. If eggs are transported and stored correctly, they can last for several weeks in the fridge, or even longer in the freezer (8, 9). You can always store eggs refrigerated to prolong their shelf life, but make sure you are storing them correctly.

Eggs can be placed in a fridge or freezer beyond that time to prolong their shelf life, but will not last as long as eggs kept refrigerated since they were purchased. If eggs are kept refrigerated all of the time, they rarely spoil or go bad. Although eggs can survive for up to one week at room temperature, a general rule is to refrigerate them ASAP.

Unwashed eggs can be collected and stored at room temperature on the counter of the kitchen for 2-4 weeks, where they will stay just as edible, if not just as fresh, as they were laid.

Fresh eggs have a protective coating which helps them to keep up to five weeks refrigerated; after boiling, the protection is removed, and eggs only keep for a week when refrigerated. As mentioned, washing eggs removes the protective coating, so you need to refrigerate immediately. To keep your fresh eggs without refrigerating, you may want to try using one of these techniques.

You can let your newly laid chicken eggs sit outside at room temperature for up to one month before you store them in the refrigerator. If your farm-fresh chicken eggs are washed, you will want to store them in the refrigerator to help them stay fresh and delicious.

If you are raising your own chickens or buying eggs from a local chicken farmer, you do not have to refrigerate the eggs right away. When it comes to keeping your fresh eggs, you can store your eggs at room temperature in any sort of container, like a egg crock, but place them in a cardboard egg carton if you want to keep them fresh. If you buy your eggs at a refrigerated market, as most people do in the U.S., you can store them safely in your refrigerator for up to 35 days (five weeks).

Once the eggs are refrigerated, you can safely keep them in the refrigerator for another three to five weeks past their sold-by date. However, fresh eggs should not remain in the refrigerator longer than three to five weeks. Raw eggs may be kept in the refrigerator for up to seven days, but should be kept in their cardboard packaging and kept away from the cooler section.

In fact, fresh eggs can be kept up to three weeks without refrigeration if properly stored in a cool, dry place. Farm-fresh eggs taste cooler and have more flavor than store-bought eggs, which is understandable considering that they are typically shipped from a farm fresh in one or two days, but store-bought eggs may last for 30 days. It is recommended that you eat farm-fresh eggs for up to two weeks, as they have better flavors, but you are okay eating eggs for as long as a month after laying. Fresh eggs are best quality to eat for up to 3 weeks after your purchase date, without refrigeration, as long as you keep them stored correctly in a clean, cool, dry area.

Most containers will have a best-by date stamped on the packaging, but generally, eggs will remain fresh for 4-5 weeks when kept refrigerated at all times. Your eggs will keep fresh for a lot longer if you use a container such as my preferred Amazon container. By the way, if you do not use reusable container to store eggs (like my favorite from Amazon), you are limiting the amount of time that your eggs can remain fresh in your refrigerator.

There is an exception to this rule: If you have to wash your eggs in water, it is okay to keep the eggs straight away in the fridge — that is because you removed the blossoms from them (more on that below). There is no reason to put a mineral coating on eggs that you buy at a store, as once an egg has been cooled, it should actually remain so until you are ready to use it.

Keeping your eggs in their cardboard container not only will keep them safer, it will prevent them from picking up smells from pungent foods, and it prevents moisture from being lost. You can keep eggs safely in the container, and keep them in your refrigerator, towards the back.

If you are not planning on using the eggs in one month, you can transfer them into a cooler, where they can stay up to 3 months. If you decide to put the eggs in the freezer (either because you cleaned your eggs and removed the blossoms, or because you simply want them cooler), they will last for up to six months in the freezer–we would not keep them longer than that. If, however, you bought eggs fresh from a farm–or collected them from a backyard chicken coop– these eggs can last for 14 to 21 days without refrigeration at room temperature. If you live outside of the United States, in a country where chickens are vaccinated against salmonella and eggs are not washed or refrigerated, eggs can be kept safely at room temperature for 1 to 3 weeks, if desired (11).

Hard-boiled eggs, when refrigerated, can be allowed to remain untouched for one week and remain safe for consumption (peeled or not). To lessen your chances of Salmonella infection from eggs, consider buying pasteurized eggs, keeping them refrigerated, and always making sure to boil until they are firm. One way to store eggs without refrigeration is by immersing them in a pan of cold water with 1 tablespoon white distilled vinegar or sea salt.

Eggs stored in sealed containers, like your lunchbox, can easily last for six months, and will still have that fresh flavor. Eggs can be frozen up to one year, but they need to be used within four months to maximize freshness. You can expect eggs to be at least one week old when they hit your local grocery stores shelves.

Egg white will spill into the boiling water if the egg’s shell is cracked. This lowers the egg’s mass, allowing the less-dense egg to float more readily. Although it is unsightly, some particles of scrambled egg white will float around in the boiling water.
