You can leave raw chicken in the fridge for 1 to 2 days only whether it’s whole or in pieces, drumsticks, wings, or ground. How long can chicken stay in the fridge truly depends on the temperature it was held at before you purchased it, temperature inside your fridge, and how long it was off refrigeration.

You can store uncooked chicken up to two days in a refrigerator, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that you keep uncooked chicken for one to two days, at a minimum. If you do not want to cook it immediately, you can keep the raw chicken (either whole or chopped) in the fridge for up to 12 days. Raw chicken only needs to stay in the fridge for two days before it is cooked or frozen, so keep some of your favorite chicken recipes on hand. Although the USDA advises cooking raw chicken, the USDA advises that you should avoid keeping raw chicken in the fridge for at least two days. According to USDA and U.S. Food and Drug Administration, raw chicken (whether whole, in pieces like breasts, thighs, drumsticks, wings, or in pieces) should not be kept in the fridge longer than one or two days.

The general rule of thumb is that chicken that has been thawed but is still raw will last one to two days in the fridge. While there is no way to tell exactly how long you can store raw chicken in your fridge, there are guidelines that you can follow that will help keep your raw chicken fresh for as long as possible. If you are not going to be cooking the raw chicken within a day or two, then moving it into the freezer is best.

You need to know this timeframe works only when the chicken has been fully frozen for that whole time. For instance, if you have an entire chicken or turkey that is frozen, you need to prepare it in 1 -2 days. If the chicken has just come out of the fridge, frozen rock solid, you might have a little extra time.

If you notice that there are small pockets of freezer burn in the chicken, then you may want to trim those once you have defrosted the chicken. This is a great space-saving technique, and pre-cut chicken does not get stuck together, so you can pull off as much as you need without having to thaw it all.

Weighing out and wrapping the individual pieces of chicken in foil, cling film, or butcher paper will let you keep your chickens as portions that are easier to prepare. Use sealed containers, zipper-lock bags (if freezing briefly), or a food preserver to freeze both raw and cooked chicken. You can also freeze chicken that is cooked, but it will not last quite as long as the raw.

The safer option is to defrost and cook your chicken, create a tasty dish, and then freeze whatever is left for another day. To avoid leaving it outside, whether it is raw or cooked, the chicken should always be kept in the fridge or freezer, rather than left out on the counter. If there has been a power loss, or the chicken has been removed from the freezer for any length of time, then it might not be safe to eat.

For a chicken to be safe to consume, it must be heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. While chicken that is cool to room temperature is okay to eat, it is more likely to contain bacteria that can cause food poisoning if it is been sitting there longer than 2 hours. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, you can safely leave raw chicken at room temperature for up to two hours, or up to 60 minutes if it is over 90 degrees F.

Bacteria can begin to flourish in temperatures above 40 degrees, so keep chicken below this temperature to extend its shelf life. Bacteria can rapidly grow if raw chicken is kept at temperatures from 40AdegF to 140AdegF. If the chicken is left outside of the refrigerator too long, the bacteria may multiply to a point that it is no longer safe to eat. Keeping the raw chicken in the refrigerator will slow down bacteria growth enough that it will make it possible to have a few days worth of chicken. Keeping chicken in the refrigerator helps to slow down bacteria growth, since bacteria tend to grow slowly at temperatures under 40degF (4degC) (2, 3).

You can safely store large cuts of meat in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days after you bring it home, and until you cook or freeze it. Raw, uncooked sausages made with turkey, chicken, beef, or pork can safely last in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days. Raw poultry, such as chicken, turkey, game chicken, duck, and others, can be safely stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. For raw ground meat, such as pork, beef, hamburger, lamb, veal, venison, or ground poultry, such as ground chicken, ground turkey, and so forth, cook or freeze the raw ground meat for 1-2 days.

You can store chopped or cut poultry up to 9 months, while whole poultry can be frozen up to 1 year. While unpacked chicken (which we buy whole or chopped up in pieces from a butcher shop) may last for up to three days, you are best off keeping it no longer than two days. If you store the raw chicken in your freezer, either in a sealed, freezer-safe container, or a vacuum-sealed bag, it should remain safe for thawing and eating for up to nine months, if in pieces, or up to 12 months, for the whole chicken. Cooked chicken can last in the fridge for three to four days, as long as it is stored properly (in a zipper-lock food-storage bag or another tightly sealed container), according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Whether you roast it, make nuggets and patties, buy pre-made rotisserie chicken, or whip up the homemade chicken KFC recipe, the leftovers should keep for three or four days in the fridge, giving you a bit more shelf life than if it were raw. Baking or grilling pieces of chicken will keep for four months in the freezer, the nuggets and patties for one to three months, and one covered with sauce or gravy may still be good six months after freezing.

You can refreeze both raw and cooked chicken safely, according to the USDA guidelines, for the duration of the appropriate shelf life. Itas important to note that if you do have raw and cooked chicken in your refrigerator, itas best to store them separately, and cooked chicken should always have higher levels than the raw. This is particularly important if you are planning on marinating your chicken overnight or longer.

Is it OK if the raw chicken is slimy?

It’s probably no longer safe to consume if the texture changes in any way, such as becoming more soft, slimy, sticky, or residue-like. The texture of raw chicken should be shiny and slightly soft; it shouldn’t be slimy, sticky, or tacky. Slimy, sticky, and too soft are typical characteristics of cooked chicken that has gone rotten.

How can you tell if the thawed chicken is bad?

These symptoms of poor chicken include sliminess, an unpleasant odor, and a change in color to yellow, green, or grey. Throw away any chicken that has passed its expiration date, has been cooked or raw in the refrigerator for more than 4 days, or that has spent more than 2 hours in the danger zone of temperature.

How can you tell if the raw chicken is spoiled?

Generally, fresh raw chicken has a light pinkish color, little to no odor, and is tender and moist. On the other hand, spoiled chicken is slimy, has a foul smell, and has a yellowish, greenish, or greyish color.
