Cooked shrimps should not be left out of the refrigerator for longer than 2 hours at a normal room temperature. If the temperature is above 90 degrees, it is better to refrigerate it after half an hour of cooking because if the shrimps are not well cooked, there are chances of bacteria spreading rapidly.
You can store cooked shrimp in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days, provided they have been handled properly. Since canned shrimp are already cooked and stored, they have a longer shelf life in the refrigerator. For longer storage, you can put cooked shrimp in the freezer and this can give you almost a whole month to eat them safely. When you’re ready to reuse the shrimp, simply remove them from the freezer the night before and refrigerate. If you find that you have leftover any shrimp, remember this text and store them in the refrigerator as soon as possible. It’s a good idea to divide leftover shrimp into portions so you can defrost what you need each time, because you can’t re-freeze shrimp once it’s cooked, frozen, and thawed. If you left frozen shrimp to thaw on the counter at room temperature, you need to cook them immediately (within two hours) after thawing.
Unfortunately, if you keep shrimp outside at room temperature for more than two hours, the only safe option is to throw them away. Cooked seafood left at room temperature for more than 2 hours is contaminated with harmful bacteria; hence, you should not consume cooked shrimp. If you eat shrimp that hasn’t been eaten for too long, even if it’s well cooked, you may be prone to food poisoning and become very sick. Usually, the results of eating bad shellfish show up within 48 hours after eating, although it can start up to four hours after eating, when the shrimp is being processed by the digestive system. When it starts, cooked shrimp only remain healthy for a short period of time before bacterial growth rises to levels that could make you sick if you eat them.

When exposed to temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, cooked shrimp fall prey to bacterial growth that can spoil them within 2-3 hours. In fact, any temperature between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit is hot enough for bacteria and parasites to live in food; this is why shrimp must be refrigerated or frozen to prevent bacterial growth. Like most perishable foods, shrimp can promote the spread of harmful bacteria when exposed to higher temperatures.
Unfortunately, shrimp don’t last long at room temperature, as shrimp and other seafood can start to spoil or grow bacteria in as little as 2-3 hours at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Frozen shrimp can take up to four hours to completely thaw and become hot enough to harbor bacteria. An effective and safe way to defrost shrimp is to refrigerate them overnight (or at least 12 hours). If you don’t mind the fact that your shrimp won’t taste as good as it once did when you first cooked it, you can place it in a food container or freezer bag and freeze it for up to nine months or so. addition (permanently frozen at 0 degrees Fahrenheit).
You can also freeze shrimp to extend their shelf life; as in the refrigerator, shrimp should be placed in an airtight container or sturdy freezer bag, or wrapped tightly in heavy-duty aluminum foil or freezer wrap before placing in the freezer. Much depends on storage conditions: shrimp should be stored in the refrigerator for no more than two hours after cooking. Shrimp cooked and thawed in the refrigerator can be stored in the refrigerator for an additional 3-4 days before cooking; shrimp thawed in the microwave or in cold water should be eaten immediately. According to the USDA, you can safely store thawed raw shrimp in the refrigerator for a day or two before cooking.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ready-to-eat foods such as cooked shrimp should be refrigerated at 40 degrees F (about 4 degrees C) or lower to prevent the growth of bacteria such as like Listeria causing foodborne illness (1). Bacteria grow rapidly at temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit; cooked shrimp should be discarded if left for more than 2 hours at room temperature. To prevent this from happening, do not let the cooked shrimp rest for more than 2 hours and no more than an hour if the temperature outside is above 90 degrees.
It is advisable not to leave shrimps to rest for more than two hours; you also need to know how to tell if frozen shrimp is bad so you don’t buy or eat tainted shrimp. Another thing to note, no matter what tools or methods you choose to reheat cooked shrimp, your food’s internal temperature should be up to 145 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure they are safe to eat (2). In addition to ensuring the proper temperature in the refrigerator, how you store the shrimp is also important and this will affect the shelf life while it is in the refrigerator.
With the right storage method, both cooked and raw shrimp that have never been frozen can keep in the freezer for up to 3 months with the best protein and tastiest qualities. You can use freezer bags to store shrimp in the freezer – freezer bags are perfect for small freezers, especially if you store the shrimp in individual layers and stack the bags on top of each other. While a shrimp dish can be made quickly, you may overcook and want to save some for another day.
