How Do Electric Stoves Work?

Conventional electric stoves come with a thick coil of wire referred to as the heating element. When you turn on the stove, electricity flows through this element, raising its temperature and heating it. Your pan sits upon this element, usually hidden underneath the surface of a stovetop.

Each heating element on your electric stove (usually four or five) is connected to its own control switch.

When the power is turned on, alternating current flows through copper heating coils installed under the flat glass or ceramic surface of induction cookers. Electrical current travels through each leg, and if the leg collides with the built-in electrical heater component, heat is generated.

How do the metal coils work?

The electrical resistance heats up to form a hot incandescent metal coil that transfers its heat through the glass ceramic by infrared energy and to the glass ceramic by convective heat. In a smooth electric hob, the coils are placed under a single plate of thermo-hardened glass-ceramic material that covers the hob. However, most modern electric hobs are radiant burners, with coils placed under the ceramic surface for better heat distribution.

Do induction hobs heat up your kitchen?

Relatively little heat is lost to the air, which means that induction hobs don’t heat up your kitchen like gas or electric hobs, which is a plus in summer or in a crowded kitchen.
