Your installation must also leave a sufficient amount of space between the top of your gas range and the bottom of your microwave. A 30-inch spacing will give you plenty of space to work around a gas stove, but will still allow you to place a microwave within easy reach of most adults.

If installing your microwave inside of the 30-inch range puts it out of range for some users, you may want to drop it down slightly without harming your cookspace above your stove. If you have a wall oven and room to work with, placing your microwave over the top can give it a clean look, as well as make sure that the microwave is an optimal height to operate. You may wish to set up the microwave nearer to your oven so that it is easier to reach, though 14 inches is usually plenty of room for most people with an average height.

The recommended minimum difference in distance is based on if your microwave is a countertop or range model. Using a countertop microwave on an over-the-range system requires placing it at least 2 feet from the stovetop due to the construction limitations. Short users might struggle with microwaves that are mounted a minimum of 13 inches above your stovetop.

It is worth noting that the range-top microwaves are usually installed 13-18 inches above the cooktop, whereas, in case of the countertop microwaves, they need to be placed further away from the cooker than an over-the-range microwave, as there is significant heat resistance difference between the countertop and the range-top units. If you own an over-the-range microwave, make sure you have measured at least 13 inches away from your stovetop to allow for sufficient space to circulate air around both appliances. It is safe to place your microwave above your gas stove as long as there is a minimum of 30 inches of space between the two appliances, so you do not risk damaging your appliances and are sure of your safety.

A microwave installed too close to the gas burners severely limits the space available for cooking at the range. A microwave placed noticeably lower than recommended spacing may pose problems, since the heat coming off of the stovetop may cause the ovens thermal protection panels to break.

If the height of the kitchen cabinets is higher than required, it might be necessary to set the microwaves slightly higher than manufacturers recommend. Of course, a higher-level cabinet might have to be modified or replaced during any installation if you have to move the microwave up. There must be a cabinet or rack over top the place the microwave is going to be installed, so you can attach the microwaves top to that. You might find you will have to trim down a wall cupboard or install another one that is of appropriate height before starting to install your microwave.

According to National Kitchen and Bath Association guidelines, at least 18 inches of clearance between your microwave oven and a typical 36-inch cooking surface height is required. Subtract 20 inches (or whatever the minimum spacing between microwave and cooktop is for you) from this spacing to determine the total height of a microwave you can accommodate. The 66-inch from floor measurement would leave about 13 inches of space between the surface of the cooktop underneath and the base, the front, of your microwave.

If the microwaves materials are flammable, you need to add an additional one-half ft, or 6 inches, to this distance. Manufacturer instructions indicate a minimum of 30 inches from the stovetop to the bottom of the cabinets above the microwave.

Microwaves that can accommodate a smaller clearance should install according to manufacturer recommendations. Microwaves cannot be mounted above a stovetop, unless specifically designed as a model with a rangetop and included ventilation.

If you take a look at all of the different variations of microwaves on the market, as far as width, height, and depth, you will see there is really no standard size, but the microwaves designed to fit in a 30in. Over-the-range microwaves and Advantiums need at least a height of 66 inches to mount from floor to unit floor.
