Does Corn Syrup Go Bad
Corn syrup can be stored for a long time in the pantry. Once opened, corn syrup doesn’t need refrigeration. Keeping the corn syrup away from sunlight should keep it safe for consumption. And the best-by date is an excellent indicator to know when the quality of corn syrup isn’t the best.
Corn syrup has the same shelf life as on the label, but can be used indefinitely. Corn syrup’s indefinite shelf life makes it ideal for long-term storage, but it can still spoil, especially if not stored properly. Stored properly, corn syrup is great on pantry shelves and in the fridge.

The expiration date for corn syrup is printed on the bottle, but it is properly sealed and stored on a shelf in the pantry away from light and heat. Corn syrup will keep almost indefinitely longer than its own. All of our syrup is heat-packed and sealed, so it will keep indefinitely until opened.
Once opened, real maple syrup should be kept refrigerated for about a year. The bottle can be refrigerated after opening, but the syrup will be thicker and pour more slowly. Last but not least, please note that opening the bottle for the first time does not affect the expiry date ([KS]) of the syrup.

If you remember to take the syrup out of the refrigerator quickly enough before drinking, then it is ready to drink. If you take good care of it, it will serve you for many years and you will be able to use it all without wasting a drop. After boiling, the syrup can continue to be stored in the refrigerator for months.
The point is not that it is stored indefinitely without opening, but only a few months after opening. Once opened, high fructose corn syrup will last only if stored properly and no other contaminants get into the bottle.

If you read the Karo Syrup ([KS]) website, you will know that this sweetener is safe to consume indefinitely. This practically means that until disaster strikes with Karo syrup, it will be safe to consume.
However, even though it tastes pretty bland, it’s still safe to consume, so don’t worry about getting sick from eating expired maple syrup. As a general rule, expired corn syrup is safe to use, but if it’s expired or long past its expiration date, be sure to check for signs of spoilage and discard it if it smells or smells bad. If it looks okay, you can use corn syrup for quite some time, but if it smells bad or has changed color, you should rethink your use.
Sometimes light corn syrup may change color to a yellowish tint, but it is still edible and can be eaten. Honey is not a suitable substitute for corn syrup in candy recipes (it won’t prevent sugar from crystallizing at high temperatures), it will add sweetness and stickiness to other recipes that use corn syrup. Like maple syrup, honey is not the best choice for making hard candy or hard candies because it can crystallize. Storing corn syrup is easy enough, but if done incorrectly, it can change the texture and appearance of the corn syrup, and possibly even spoil it.
In short, corn syrup will most likely not go bad unless you leave it open (unsealed) for a long period, and other substances, along with bacteria, will get inside. While it is difficult for bacteria to thrive in syrup due to the sweet environment, over time mold and bacteria will find a way to get into the bottle or container, especially once it has been opened. Do not use any utensils to collect the syrup, as this may allow food particles to enter, leading to mold growth. You can avoid contamination of the syrup by making sure no food particles or contaminants get inside while the bottle is closed.

Imitation maple syrup often contains preservatives that make them safe to store open without refrigeration. Open jars of artificial maple syrup can be kept in the pantry for up to a year. If the syrup has stood for too long, it will become thicker and darker than when you bought it.
If you open a bottle of corn syrup and notice an unpleasant, bitter, or alcoholic smell, the unpleasant smell is a sign that the corn syrup has gone bad and should be thrown away. Some brands, such as Karo Syrups, state that corn syrup can be used indefinitely without negative side effects, although for quality reasons they are advised to use it within the stated expiration date. Karo Syrup’s website states that each bottle has an expiration date and it is best to consume the product by that date.
You can cook with this syrup, use it to sweeten coffee or tea, sprinkle it on ice cream, or anything else you can use as a liquid sweetener.
What does bad corn syrup smell like?
Corn syrup usually has a very rich treacle syrup and caramel-like smell. On opening the can of corn syrup, a highly sweetened, sore, or even alcohol-type smell is detected then it is assumed that corn syrup has expired or gone bad. It should be thrown away immediately.
Does corn syrup need to be refrigerated?
The corn syrup does not require too much of your time and attention when it comes to storage. It just needs to be stored away from direct heat and sunlight in a cool and dry place. The corn syrup does not need to be stored in the fridge after it has been opened.
Will expired corn syrup hurt you?
