Does Applesauce Go Bad?

Unopened applesauce lasts for about a couple of months after the expiration date. After opening it, please keep it in the fridge for at least a week. It should be discarded if applesauce generates an odd odour, flavour or appearance.

Opened applesauce will stay good longer, but may lose quality, taste, or burn in the freezer the longer it stays in the freezer. After taking it out of the freezer, you can put the applesauce in the refrigerator or leave it at room temperature. Once the bottle or package is opened, store it in the refrigerator or freezer in the same way as homemade applesauce to prolong its shelf life. Since homemade applesauce is likely free of preservatives, storing it in the refrigerator will extend its shelfa life.

However, if you make applesauce at home with this recipe, as long as it is kept refrigerated in an airtight container, it will keep well for 1-2 weeks. If you’re worried about applesauce spoiling before your family can eat it, store it in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. If you want your applesauce to last more than a few months past the date on the package, or if you want a homemade batch to last more than a week, storing it in the freezer would be a great idea. As long as you haven’t opened the applesauce and stored it under ideal conditions, your applesauce can be stored for at least two months past the date.

When stored properly, applesauce can be safely used for another two to four months.

Applesauce in the freezer will keep fresh for 6-9 months, if you use the freezer, then about a year. If stored properly, canned applesauce can keep for up to a year (best quality) and can often be eaten after that.
