Do Marshmallows Expire?
Marshmallows eventually do expire, but not in a way other foods do. After the expiration date, they usually remain good for approximately one month or two if remain unopened. Once opened, the sugar candies retains quality for about 1 week.
Marshmallows can be eaten about a month after the expiration date, or expiration date if the marshmallow has not been opened. If the container has not been opened, marshmallows can be consumed within a few weeks after the expiration date. Once the package is opened, marshmallows can last anywhere from 7 days to 4 months, depending on how you store them. Marshmallows usually stay fresh for 1-6 months past the expiration date printed on the package if the package has never been opened.
|Types||Past Expiration Date||Fridge||Freezer||Pantry|
|Open Marshmallow||1-2 months||3 days||3 months||1 week|
|Packaged Marshmallow||6-8 months||1-2 week||4 months||2 months|
Marshmallows usually keep for a few weeks after a date and one to two months after the package is first opened. Unopened, they can stay fresh even months after the expiration date.
Sure, marshmallows can keep good quality for a few more months or even longer, but who knows for sure. While marshmallows may be safe to eat after opening for a month, they probably won’t taste as good as they used to. When it comes to homemade marshmallows, they probably won’t keep for long.
If you buy marshmallows online, you can be sure that they will last longer than anything else you buy in the store. Marshmallows, like in the pantry or refrigerator, will last longer in the refrigerator. Marshmallows stored this way can keep for up to three months if not reopened after refrigeration. If for some reason one month’s storage isn’t enough for you, you can freeze marshmallows.
For more time, you can refrigerate the marshmallow after opening or even freeze it. Store the container in the refrigerator to store the marshmallows for 1 week, or the freezer for up to 4 months. Unopened marshmallows will keep for 1 month in the pantry, up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator, and up to 4 months in the refrigerator.

As for marshmallows, an unopened package of marshmallows will keep for about a month or more (sometimes 4-8 months) when stored in a cool, dry, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Marshmallows have a shelf life of 1-2 weeks when stored in an airtight container or zippered plastic bag in a cool, dry, dark corner of the storage room away from direct sunlight and heat. If you follow the right steps and store a bag of high-quality marshmallows in an airtight jar, it will last for weeks.
Close the opened package well and place in the freezer if you will not use the marshmallow for a long time. If your bag of marshmallows is nearing its expiration date, you can zip it up and put it straight into the freezer. Once you open the marshmallow bag, make sure you seal it very tightly or even place it in a zippered bag that you can bleed the air out of.

If you store your marshmallows properly in an airtight container or bag, they should stay very fresh and thawed to their original state. However, you can expect most store-bought marshmallows to stay fresh after 5-7 months because they’re stored properly (which we’ll discuss in the last section).
If marshmallows become sticky even after being stored in an airtight container, try dusting them evenly with cornstarch. To keep marshmallows fresh and loose, place them in a freezer-safe plastic bag or container with an airtight lid and store in the freezer. By placing marshmallows in the freezer, you can stock them up when they hit the sale without worrying about waste. Even after opening a bag of marshmallows, you can store marshmallows at room temperature.
If necessary, remove and thaw at room temperature, and marshmallows will be as good as new. You can also extend the shelf life of marshmallows, if necessary, to enjoy them longer and reduce waste.
You can store marshmallows in the refrigerator or freeze to extend their shelf life and maintain their best quality for a longer period of time. You can also freeze marshmallows, but you need to be careful in this regard, you should store marshmallows in plastic freezer bags or freezer-resistant containers. Proper storage of marshmallows can also help prevent spoilage.
Regular marshmallows contain no ingredients that can go bad, so you don’t have to worry about proper storage. If marshmallows contain perishable ingredients, such as fruit, chocolate, or nuts, they may spoil over time.
If your marshmallows are old, stale, and hard, you can simply place it in a resealable plastic bag with a slice of bread to soften the aged marshmallows again. All you have to do is take a slice or two of wet bread and put them in a resealable plastic bag along with the marshmallows. You can add some moisture to stale marshmallows by adding a slice or two of bread to the bag. This loaf will absorb excess moisture from the marshmallow bag or container, keeping the marshmallows fresh for a while.
Use a spoonful of cornstarch to keep marshmallows from sticking together after long periods of storage in an airtight container. Even better, it takes about 10-30 minutes to thaw them on the counter, or you can put them in a hot drink and they’ll be ready right away.

Marshmallows come with a shelf life of 2 to even 6 months and they can last for maximum 1-2 past their expiration date. You can extend their shelf-life if they are sealed and away from moisture, heat, and ants. They will harden, turn yellow, and lose their flavor with time.
