Do Cookies Go Bad

Can Cookies Expire?

Cookies will last a significant period if proper precautions are taken and you ensure they aren’t exposed to the elements. Homemade or bakery cookies can be safe to eat for two to three weeks when kept at room temperature and for two months if kept in the refrigerator. They can last for up to 12 months if kept in the freezer in an air tight container.

Properly stored, a packet of cookie mix will usually keep its best quality for 12-18 months at room temperature. To maximize the shelf life of the cookie mix after opening the package, transfer the cookie mix to a sealed, airtight container, or place the original bag of cookie mix in a resealable plastic freezer bag. Store cookies in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap to keep them from stale. Airtight plastic containers and bags can keep cookies in good condition for days that can go at room temperature—simply pop cookie bags into these other jars.

Store-bought packaged cookies should also be in an airtight container, and make sure homemade cookies are fresh before sealing them in the container. They may look lovely on the counter, but despite their name, the cookie jars themselves are often not completely airtight. Because chocolate chip cookies aren’t processed or packaged, homemade cookies don’t last as long as store-bought cookies. No matter what container they’re in, if you leave them out in the fresh air, the cookies will start to lose moisture and flavor.

Freshly baked biscuits are sensitive to moisture: too much or too little can cause the biscuits to lose their flavor and texture more quickly. Soft, crunchy cookies can also begin to absorb the flavor of other cookies when mixed, so try to store each cookie recipe in a different cookie storage container. Hard biscuits and baked goods, such as biscuits, non-frosted bars, and glazed hard biscuits, can generally be layered in airtight containers without losing the shape or freshness of hard biscuits and baked goods. Homemade cookie dough can be stored in the refrigerator for three to five days, but if you freeze it, the dough can keep for 6 to 12 months. In the freezer, frozen raw cookie dough can last 9 to 12 months, giving you plenty of time to use it before it gets nasty. If you keep regular frozen cookie dough new in the refrigerator, you can usually expect that cookie dough to last 1 to 2 weeks past the best before date. As a general rule, any cookie dough left on the counter at room temperature can keep for 2-4 hours, but then it can go bad, especially if it’s already expired.

To be on the safe side, it’s probably not recommended to eat expired cookie dough, however you can eat it after 1 or 2 months, best by date if you make sure you’ve stored it properly. An expired cookie will taste stale, but will generally not cause illness until the oils inside the cookie turn rancid. Frozen cookies have a shorter shelf life than regular cookies and you can expect frozen cookies to last 2-3 days best after baking and icing.

Cookies, half-crowns, and other dry biscuits can get too dry when heated, so skip this step. If you want a little softness, but still keep the cookies crunchy, reheat them for two to three minutes in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (and another minute or two if you’re reheating the cookies from the freezer). With the latter in mind, you might want to consider storing leftover cookies in the refrigerator after they’re made.

If you want to start cooking but still want freshly baked cookies after a few days, save the dough. For convenience, freeze the dough for up to three months, then thaw it in the refrigerator before baking and decorating the reindeer chocolate chip cookies. For the most part, freezing cookies for storage will not harm the flavor or texture of the cookies.

Leaving cookies on a tray without a chance to seal them will still expose them to fluctuations in oxygen and humidity, which can make them stale. Closed containers prevent exposure to large amounts of oxygen and can prevent moisture or dry air from changing the texture of the cookies. In addition to using preservatives and storing cookies in airtight containers, the best “trick” you can use is n. 8 and throw in a bag of carbon dioxide, such as those found on Amazon, into the container to replace the oxygen.

You can also place a sandwich inside the container to absorb excess moisture and help keep the cookies soft. Heavy flavored cookies like molasses or mint can bleed into other cookies over time, so store each flavor in a separate container if possible. Go ahead and use cookies and cakes (which can keep for up to five days in an airtight container) as well as muffins, breads, and pastries (they will start to set in two to three days, but keep better here than anywhere else).

If stored properly, an unopened cookie will retain its best quality for approximately 1 year, but will remain safe beyond that time. You can still consume packaged or canned foods after the expiration date, as long as they do not show obvious signs of unfitness for consumption. Cookies made with more perishable ingredients, such as cottage cheese biscuits, jam biscuits, or meringue biscuits, require a lower temperature for several hours after cooking.

Some common signs of old cookies are: they will get a hard and dry texture or a soft texture. There are, of course, some health issues linked with bad foods so always remember to examine food first for the safety of your health and consume it before its shelf life has expired!

How long do cookies stay good for?

In the refrigerator, baked cookies can be stored for two months, or at room temperature for 15 to 22 days. For eight to 12 months, cookies can be stored in the freezer without losing their quality. For seven days, you can refrigerate moist bars, such as cheesecake and lemon bars.

Is it safe to eat expired cookies?

It is easy to detect the stale taste of cookies or chips once they have grown old. Nevertheless, if the cookie doesn’t smell funky or crumble apart in your hand and doesn’t smell bad, it’s okay to eat because the oils in the cookie may go bad over a long time.
