Can You Use Coconut Oil As An Alternative To Olive Oil
If you’re running out of olive oil and have coconut oil at hand, you can use coconut oil as an alternative to olive oil. Since they both are neutral oil, rich in fats, and have a higher smoke point, they can be used as substitutes for each other. Use a 1:1 ratio for any recipe.
The best substitutes for coconut oil are butter, extra virgin olive oil, sunflower oil, grape seed oil, almond oil, neem oil, hazelnut oil, avocado oil, shea butter, and hemp seeds. The only downside to using avocado oil is that avocado oil can be quite expensive compared to coconut oil or other options, so you won’t want to use it for recipes that require a lot of oil (such as frying). While not as healthful as avocado oil, it has a high smoke point, making it ideal for deep frying (like fried tofu) as well as everyday stir frying (like yaki udon).
This oil has a high smoke point of up to 230 degrees Celsius, making it particularly suitable for cooking, including frying. Although hemp seed oil has a smoke point of 330 degrees Fahrenheit, it stays stable at 475 degrees for 30 minutes without burning the food you fry. If you want to preserve the beneficial properties, you can simply drizzle hemp oil on vegetables or use it in place of coconut oil in french fries, stir fries, and other low-heat cooking methods.
In addition to frying, hemp seed oil has a slightly nutty flavor that makes it an excellent mayonnaise and salad dressing. You can use sesame oil in salad dressings because it tastes great when sprinkled on pasta or pizza. Olive oil is an ideal substitute for coconut oil for cooking and frying because it adds extra flavor to salad dressings and sauces and is low in saturated fat. If you want to avoid olive oil in pizza dough, you can use other oils such as vegetable, sunflower, corn, soybean, peanut, safflower, grapeseed, canola, and coconut oils.
While you can technically substitute coconut oil for olive oil when cooking because the texture of the oil is similar when coconut oil melts and it’s all plant-based, I don’t recommend this because of the coconut oil’s flavor. Of the possible substitutes for canola oil, sunflower oil is probably the best because it is similar to canola oil in terms of color, flavor and smoke point. Unfortunately, each oil that can be used as a substitute or a suitable substitute has a different composition. Unrefined almond oil has a naturally nutty flavor and aroma and is best added to salad dressings, soups, and baked goods.
Only refined almond oil should be used for cooking and frying because of its high smoke point. Chefs know that poor quality oils can add too much flavor, which can drastically alter the taste of baked goods. Similar to coconut oil, canola oil has a high smoke point, ranging from 400 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, canola oil can be used for any high temperature cooking such as baking, frying and grilling.

In fact, we should cook with Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil as it increases the absorption of phytochemicals present in other plant foods consumed with meals. Although coconut oil is also safe for cooking, it does not have the same health benefits as extra virgin olive oil. Coconut oil can probably be used from time to time, but it’s far from being a healthy food. In addition, the MCT research focuses on carbon 8 and 10 chain fats (found in very small amounts in coconut oil), not lauric acid. So you can’t claim that coconut oil burns fat, and remember, if you add a tablespoon of it to your green smoothie, you’ll get the fat it provides to burn before you burn your own fat! When it comes to weight management, extra virgin olive oil is without a doubt the winner. Here we see huge differences between the two types of oil.
This finding is the main reason why I recommend extra virgin olive oil over other olive oils. Recent research has shown that polyphenols are also important for beneficial bacteria in the gut and may exert some benefits through this pathway. Extra virgin olive oil is also the highest dietary source of squalene, which has been shown to protect against colon and skin cancer. Make sure to use this olive oil substitute in recipes where the banana flavor complements the other ingredients in the dish. If a cooking recipe calls for eight tablespoons of butter, you will use olive oil instead of six tablespoons.

The oil won’t give you a strong coconut taste, but you can still add coconut flavor or shredded coconut to your recipe to keep the coconut flavor intact. Grated coconut can be substituted for chopped or coarsely chopped nuts, and dried coconut can be substituted for peanuts in most cases. Because both coconut and nuts contain a significant amount of natural oil, they can be used in place of each other in most recipes. Traditionally, tropical communities were much more likely to use whole coconut products rather than excessive amounts of extracted oil, and this is much better nutritionally.

Palm kernel oil and palm oil derivatives (compound chocolate solids, filling liquids) are used in the manufacture of compound chocolates and cocoa and nut fillings. Due to its low viscosity and high cocoa butter content, palm oil is best for dipping and coating chocolate.
Almond oil has antiviral and antibacterial properties and can even repel insects when used for cosmetic or skincare purposes. This vegetable oil has long been used to improve skin health, from treating a variety of skin conditions to soothing dry skin. Derived from sunflower seeds, sunflower oil is an excellent substitute for coconut oil because it is rich in vitamins A, E and D, as well as important antioxidants and fatty acids that help lower cholesterol levels, and protect heart health, and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

In times of shortage of olive oil, you can use canola oil, sunflower oil, or vegetable oil. These oils have a neutral flavor that can be substituted with olive oil. Just use the same measurement to have a stronger and more powerful flavor.

Olive oil is a plant-based oil like coconut oil and functions like it. You can use a ratio of 1-for-1 substitution of it. We don’t suggest involving olive oil in prepared meal in light of the fact that the flavor can be so strong. But it is good essential cooking oil. For baking we suggest, coconut oil though.
