You can keep frozen meals in the fridge, but they won’t stay frozen for long. Once they start to thaw, they’ll need to be eaten before they get spoiled. When you don’t have time to cook, just frozen meals in the fridge to thaw and then heat them up when you’re ready to eat

The chances that you will be ill from your frozen meals depend on what you do with your meals when they are frozen and when they are thawed, says Ken Immer. In fact, frozen meals are made specifically for microwaving from frozen, and most manufacturers recommend throwing out anything that is allowed to thaw before cooking. You can safely refreeze frozen foods that have thawed–raw or cooked–although you might experience some quality loss from losing the moisture during thawing.

Raw, thawed food may be frozen again, but only if it has been cooked since it was thawed and before refreezing. If you leave your defrosted food overnight in the refrigerator, it will lose flavor and texture. Freezing your food does no harm to your food, and food thaws naturally once it is not cool enough anymore.

If food is frozen correctly, it will remain safe to eat indefinitely, though after some time, taste and texture might be affected. Food that has been frozen and has been kept frozen (no power loss, for instance) should remain safe to eat indefinitely. Do not fret over your food; most things stay frozen in your refrigerator for a couple hours as your freezer defrosts.

Remove items from your fridge or freezer, wrap the frozen items with a heavy paper towel, and place them in close proximity to each other, or put in your neighbors cooler. Arrange freezer contents by food category to make things easier to find and minimize the amount of time that you have the freezer door open. Before placing foods into the freezer, be sure they are either in a sealed container, or tightly wrapped in freezer bags or something like that, to prevent them from drying out from cold air.

It is OK to re-freeze or use food that is part frozen, still contains ice crystals, or is about as cold as if it were in a freezer (40degF). If you purchased previously frozen meat, poultry, or fish from a retail store, it is OK to refreeze if the previously frozen meat was handled correctly and kept at or below 40degF at all times. Thawed or partially-thawed foods that are in your freezer can safely be refrozen as long as they did not reach temperatures higher than 40degF.

Sometimes, frozen foods are partially or fully thawed due to delays getting them to your freezer, power failures, or changes to the plans of cooking food. Frozen foods can sit in the fridge for around 3-4 days before they begin to thaw, but they are best used within one week of purchase. Frozen, uncooked foods can be defrosted and kept in the fridge up to 24 hours before cooking or throwing out.

Defrosting frozen raw foods only once and keeping them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before having to be cooked or discarded is a good idea. Keep foods safe from bacteria growth while defrosting, too, by refrigerating in a cooler, rather than on a countertop or sink. Never let foods defrost in a hot place (defrosting in a refrigerator at 5C is the safest way), loosely cover, and make sure they are fully cooled before baking: bake foods shortly after they are defrosted.

It takes just minutes to defrost freezer items, and you can defrost them when you are out of home, too. The freezer is often a last-resort spot – whether it is for frozen meals that can be cooked quickly or to hold foods that you would like to make but are just not cooking at the moment. The freezer can be a source of much joy, as long as you know what you are looking for, or if you are freezing food correctly to begin with. Most people are bad at storing their foods in a freezer the right way, so there is a window of time when the foods are of their highest quality.

Freezing food later might decrease quality, but freezing now and eating it later is still completely safe. A frozen pizza will retain optimal quality for about 1-2 months when kept correctly, though it will remain safe longer. The freezing times given are only for the optimum quality; left-over pizzas stored frozen at 0degF for a longer time will last permanently. Food stored consistently at 0degF will always be safe to thaw and eat; it is just quality that is affected by long-term storage in a freezer.

Frozen foods in the average home freezer will last for three months before they start showing signs of freezer burn, generally speaking. If sufficient microbes survive freezing, frozen food can get you sick unless you heat it at high enough temperatures to destroy bacteria before eating.

No matter how well you pack your food, air gets trapped inside, causing water to suck out; this results in freezer burn, negatively impacting texture and flavor. Freezer doors are opened and closed, foods are moved, packages may allow a little air to enter, and over time, ingredient quality may decline. While thawed and re-frozen foods are fine for consumption, they can be drier or harder when cooked.

Frozen fruits can safely thaw in a cooler, a sealed bag in running water, or the microwave, as long as you are using them right away, according to the National Center for Home Food Preservation. Discard perishable foods (meat, fish, fruits and vegetables, eggs, milk, and leftovers) from the fridge after 4 hours without electricity or cold storage such as dry ice. You can prepare and eat mixtures of food that are thawed, but are still frozen, such as casseroles, pot pies, frozen dinners, or pizza, but do not re-freeze. Casses-type foods are like stews and tend to freeze well as long as they are divided into smaller portions, the portions are individually frozen, and may include prepared pasta.

Although frozen foods may appear to be precooked or browned, they still need to be cooked and should be handled and prepared the same way as raw foods. The words “Cook and Serve,” “Ready to Cook,” and “Oven-Ready” are occasionally used on labels for frozen goods to indicate that they must be cooked.
