If you follow these basic food safety tips, you can greatly reduce the chance that you or your family will get sick from bacteria in or on eggs. Just like people know not to eat raw chicken or leave milk on the bench all day, there are a few easy steps to take to protect yourself from possible egg-related food poisoning.

After the expiration date, any food, including eggs, will not remain safe to eat. If the eggs were stored in the refrigerator, they could be safely consumed a day or two after the expiration date.

If the eggs are passed the expiration date on the package, you may need to evaluate them further before deciding if they are safe to eat. Most eggs are still safe to eat after 5 weeks if stored properly, although their quality and freshness may begin to decline. As long as expired eggs are handled, stored, and cooked properly, you may not notice any difference after eating eggs that are days or weeks past their expiration date.
