You may get sick from eating expired tofu, you may get nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. When it is expired, tofu may cause food poisoning and become rancid. It is made from soybean and is a rich source of iron, protein, and calcium. Expired tofu may smell bad and taste sour.

If your tofu is past its expiration date, or shows common signs of going bad, you should not try eating it. If your tofu has been stored correctly, then you may still be able to use it in your dishes, even though its best-by date or sale-by date has passed. There are many different ways you can store tofu, but keep in mind you should avoid opening the package until you are ready to use your tofu. If it is not opened, then you should simply look at the “use by” date on the package, which will give you the best indication of the shelf life.

There is not an expiration date printed on the package; you need to look at the shelf life stamped on the tofu package. A package of fresh tofu will be good for 3 – 5 days past the date stamped on the bag, but there are a lot of other things to take into consideration. For example, if you purchase a pre-packaged package of Firm Tofu (or, as we refer to it, Extra Firm), you should always keep it within three months of its manufacture date. For example, if tofu has only just passed the “best before” or “best by” dates, you may still be able to eat it with no risk of foodborne illness if you keep it stored correctly, as those dates are a proxy for tofu quality, not for its safety.

That is why a Best By Date is not an expiration date, and you can still consume even after the date has passed provided the tofu, and many other proteins, are stored correctly. Tofu and many other proteins typically have a best-by date, but that date just estimates how long they will remain in their best quality. When the best-by date on a tofu packet is approaching, many people begin wondering whether or not the tofu will spoil.

As with any type of food, there is no guarantee of how long tofu stays fresh, and there are a number of factors that may increase or decrease its shelf life. Like almost any food, tofu does not have an unlimited shelf life, and eventually, it goes bad, though the amount of time that this takes will depend on the particular method of storage that you used, how long it was stored, if it was opened or not, and a whole host of other factors. You can prolong your tofus shelf life by using a little bit of fresh water, which can keep it for about 3 to 5 days when stored in a fridge.

As long as tofu is stored correctly and unopened, it should last for at least two months from its date of manufacture. If your tofu has been opened, and you wish to freeze and store the remaining, unused tofu, there are some simple steps that you need to take to ensure that it is frozen correctly. Once you open a tofu packet and are left with a little bit of leftover tofu, the best you can really do is to transfer your tofu into a sealed container (or at least one that has a lid) and immerse it in some fresh water. After approximately two weeks, you can take the tofu out of the fridge and allow it to stay at room temperature until ready to eat.

You can let uncooked tofu sit at room temperature for less than an hour before returning it to the fridge. Raw, opened tofu should be kept at room temperature for only about 1 hour to prepare a food item or for eating. Refrigerated tofu, when left unopened, may be stored in a refrigerator 3-5 days after its use-by date. Unopened tofu may still be safe to consume for 2 – 3 months after stated manufacture date.

We would advise against using tofu that has been improperly stored, or is more than a few days past its Use By Date. Unopened tofu is still safe to eat about 2-3 months past the manufacture date that is listed on the package, if you cannot find the manufacture date on the package, the best-by date or the use-by-date is usually a good indication of how long tofu is safe to eat. Of course, if you are going to keep your tofu in the refrigerator then it is still safe to eat a week later or longer than the stated date. If your tofu has been stored correctly in a fridge or freezer, and has passed the shelf life, it should be fine to eat, but make sure you test it thoroughly before starting to cook with it.

You can still freeze cooked tofu if you wish, and it should last for 3 – 5 months once it is opened from its original packaging as well. Opened tofu, cooked tofu, or tofu scraps only last about 3 – 5 days in the fridge, so if you do not plan on eating all your opened tofu right away, you should consider putting any scraps into your freezer for later. It is important to know how long your tofu will last in your pantry, fridge, and freezer to help avoid getting ill. In most cases, tofu dates are accurate, and you should not take any chances of eating tofu past its best-by date.

You can freeze freshwater tofu and store for up to three months past the printed use-by date. I usually keep my pressed tofu in the refrigerator up to 3 days, but technically, it can last about 5 days once pressed. After that date, although it might not be as good, a cooled food should still be safe as long as it is handled well and kept in the fridge at 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Celsius) for a reasonable number of days before eating (which is probably 3-5 days for something like tofu). Tofu that has reached the end of its shelf life will darken in color to a tan or even brown color. You may also see mold or discoloration on the surface of the tofu as a sign of spoilage. Bad tofu will also smell soured or rotten, whereas fresh tofu won’t smell much at all.
