If you have popcorn that has crossed its expired date, you don’t necessarily have to worry. It’s just that expired kennels won’t pop like normal kennels. But if you have expired popcorn with deterioration signs, do not consume them. The oils & flavoring can go rancid over time.

It is safe to eat expired popcorn as long as the kernels do not show signs of mold, bursting, or dryness. If there’s expired popcorn left on the shelf, feel free to eat it, but check for visible signs of mold. You can also put popcorn kernels in an airtight container or even seal them in a bag for extra protection. If you bought packaged popcorn kernels and the kernels were already in an airtight bag, you can store them somewhere in the pantry out of direct sunlight.

Don’t worry, dry popcorn will last longer even past its expiration date if stored under ideal conditions. Be sure to use the popcorn grains in the microwave before the expiration date printed on the package. Popcorn retains its moisture for about 6-12 months, so most popcorn you find on the shelves and in microwavable bags has a shelf life of about 8 months. If you buy bags of microwave popcorn from the grocery store, they can expire within a week. If you buy microwaved popcorn from the store, it’s usually safe to eat for about two weeks.

As long as your popcorn is two to three months old, it’s safe to eat, with a few exceptions. It is important that popcorn is eaten shortly after popcorn.
