Fresh or commercially made uncooked pasta can be frozen in the freezer. If you have leftover fresh uncooked pasta, place it in the freezer, and will last for 1 month. Or, if you have dry uncooked pasta which is commercially made, you can freeze it to extend its shelf-life.

The best way to store raw pasta is to keep it cool and dry in an airtight container and place a paper towel over the pasta to absorb any liquid that may form in the airtight container. Make sure to seal the dry pasta in the original airtight package, or you can use a ziplock bag to seal the pasta tightly. To freeze pasta, simply place the raw pasta in an airtight freezer bag to remove as much air as possible. To freeze leftover noodles, you will need an airtight container that will keep the pasta for 3-5 days, or a freezer bag before placing it in the refrigerator.

At this point, you can place your homemade pasta in a freezer bag and store in the refrigerator for up to three months. It’s often better to store homemade pasta in the refrigerator than fresh pasta because the freezing process allows all the flavors to last longer. If you want to freeze cooked pasta, let it cool before placing it in a freezer bag or plastic container—both will work.

You can also prepare the pasta as ribbons, ravioli, or any other form of pasta before freezing it so it’s ready to cook right out of the freezer. You can freeze pasta separately from other ingredients and toppings, or you can also freeze them all mixed in one container. You can freeze pasta with meat sauce, pesto, or any freezer-friendly sauce you have. Keep this in mind before mixing sauce and pasta, especially if you’re storing leftovers in the freezer (because yes, you can freeze cooked pasta if you think you won’t be eating it for days or weeks).

If you have access to dry ice, place containers of sauce and pasta under it until they are frozen, then store frozen food as usual. If you need to refrigerate or freeze lasagna or a whole bowl of pasta, you can leave it in the pot and cover it well before storing it. If you don’t want to take up space in the freezer, extend the shelf life of your pasta at room temperature by storing it in an airtight container or in a resealable ziplock bag.

If you’re going to use the pasta the same day it’s cooked, you can let it dry on a clean kitchen towel for a few hours before cooking unless it’s stuffed pasta. Stuffed pasta, such as ravioli, needs to be boiled for half an hour or the stuffed pasta will start to discolor and become moist.

After that, refreezing will affect the texture of the fresh pasta, but it can be cooked straight out of the freezer if it is allowed to thaw before cooking. If you decide to freeze leftovers, be aware that they will have a different texture when you eat them and remember not to keep pasta in the freezer for too long or it will taste bad.

Drain the cooked pasta and sauce into freezer-ready containers and seal tightly before placing the pasta in the freezer for the next 3 months. If you’ve already mixed the leftover pasta into the gravy, feel free to freeze them together, ideally in an oven- or microwave-safe dish so they can be easily reheated later.

You won’t damage store-bought pasta by freezing it if you want to reduce free air space in the freezer to save money. Freezing means you can have Italian-quality pasta anytime, without the hassle of rolling and cooking it. However, homemade pasta can only keep for a day or two (although we recommend consuming it within 18 hours if you can wait that long!). The quality of raw frozen pasta will begin to decline over time, so pasta should be used within six months, or sooner if possible.

Unopened dry pasta is good to be kept for two years. On the other hand, opened dry pasta will remain fine for approximately one year. Freezing dry pasta won’t increase and might extend its shelf-life but not it is quality, so it is better to use them immediately.
