Can You Freeze Feta Cheese?

Feta cheese can be frozen, but it’s texture may change after being thawed. The freezing process can cause the cheese to become crumbly and lose its creamy texture. However, it can still be used in cooked dishes where the texture is less of a concern. It’s best to store it in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag before being placed in the freezer.

If you want to get that briny taste back, you can make feta brine and soak the feta in it for a couple hours. Open-faced feta in brine, on the other hand, will last for about a month in the refrigerator, while still maintaining good quality. If you open up a package of feta and keep it in the refrigerator in its brine, it will keep its best qualities for up to a month.

If you have an unopened feta pack that is been in brine, then provided that you put it into the refrigerator right after getting home from the grocery store, it should keep for another 2-4 weeks after the sold-by date. If you are freezing the feta short-term (like a couple weeks), simply toss it into your freezer bag. If you know already you are going to be using sliced feta, you may want to chop it up first before freezing, like I did. You could, of course, continue freezing the open feta, but you have to be aware that this process changes the feta.
