Can You Eat Ham Raw
You cannot eat ham raw as it is dangerous to eat raw ham that is not processed. It contains harmful pathogens that cause food poisoning. Eating raw ham could risk exposure to harmful bacteria like e.coli and Bacteroides. These bacteria cause severe gut problems but when you cook ham properly they are killed.
Typically, a label will say that fresh ham needs to be cooked completely at a certain temperature before eating. This means Fresh Ham is uncooked pork, and it needs to be fully cooked, which, depending on the size of your ham, may take around 5 hours.
This is because ham is cooked at safe temperatures in advance, so it does not have to heat it to kill off any potentially dangerous bacteria. The exception is if ham is canned or dried-cured, then it can be stored at room temperature. The short answer is that, if it is been aged, smoked, or baked, then the ham is considered to have been precooked, and technically, it does not have to be cooked.
Make sure that you are explicit that you do want pre-cured, non-cured ham, because some modern butchers may be unfamiliar with that demand. Otherwise, your ham label should say “pre-heated” (no-cooking) instructions, which will mean that the meat is cooked ahead of time. Uncooked hams should have cooking instructions, along with a clear statement that indicates the product should be cooked through before eating. Make sure uncooked ham does not come into contact with foods that are already cooked, or foods that do not require cooking before consumption, like uncooked vegetables and fruits.
Use different plates and cooking tools for cooked vs. raw meat, if not adequately cleaned and dried after exposure to uncooked ham. The meat is not treated with any special treatment or smoke, so you may flavor and prepare as per your specifications. The meat is typically either cured or smoked, but you can purchase uncured ham (see below section for further details). Gammon is sold as uncooked, which you will need to cook before eating, whereas ham is edible when purchased because it is fully dried, wet-cured, or aged, and has been smoked.

Hams requiring cooking prior to eating, or a raw, fresh ham, should be at an internal temperature of 145 degrees F (with three minutes of rest).
Refrigerated Raw or cooked hams may safely be stored in the fridge at 40degF or lower for a few days. The length of time that it will keep cold will vary depending on the type of ham, how fresh it was when purchased, what temperatures it was exposed to during transportation from the store to the refrigerator in your home, and what kind of packing was used. As long as your spare ham is fully cooked, it will keep fresh for 3 or 4 days in the refrigerator.
If you bought a cooked or smoked ham, and cooked it for your Christmas dinner, you will be able to store leftovers for up to four days in the refrigerator. Properly stored, a whole ham or a half-ham usually will keep 5 to seven days, or the date on the package, in the refrigerator. If kept refrigerated, the ham will remain fresh for seven to 10 days, while the turkey breast lasts 5 to seven days. Country Hams may be kept for four to twelve hours or longer in a cooler to reduce salt before cooking.

To make sure that a ham is safe from Trichinosis, uncooked hams are recommended to be cooked to about 160degF, which is medium-rare, and should allow the meat to remain moist and flavourful. When it comes to corned ham, it comes with a best-by date, and can easily keep its quality a few weeks beyond that date. As a deli meat, it is fine to eat straight from the fridge, but it is common for other hams to be heated up to improve their flavor and texture.
Let us say that clearcountry ham is salted and dried, removing moisture that is loved by germs, unlike urban ham, which is always moist and requires cooking. If you are starting out with fully cooked city ham, roast in the 350-degree-F oven for about 10 minutes per pound.
It takes about 15 minutes per pound to roast a ham in the oven at 350 degrees F. Be sure to use a thermometer to verify your ham is cooked at the correct temperature and is safe to eat. Cooking time is about 15-20 minutes per pound at 300 degrees F. No matter the size of the ham or our oven temperature, it needs to cook until internal temperature is 140 degrees F. Cooked hams that do not meet these criteriaafor example, hams cooked by your butcher, or not packed in a federally-inspected facilityamay contain pathogens, and you will want to heat them before eating.
How to Tell if a Ham is Fully Cooked?
Read the label to see if the ham is thoroughly cooked. According to experts, the only method to determine whether a ham is thoroughly cooked is by looking at the packaging rather than how the meat looks. On the box, a fully cooked ham won’t say “cook thoroughly.”
What happens if you eat raw ham?
If you eat raw ham, you may develop Trichinosis. Undercooked or raw ham is infected with Trichinella roundworms that can lead to Trichinellosis, thus making it highly unsafe to consume. You should thoroughly cook your ham at the required temperatures to help prevent being infected.
