Can You Eat Flour Raw?

While many of us have grown up playing with, or even eating, raw flour in unbaked cookie dough, pizza crust, or, if you are my brother, home-made Play-Doh, it is highly discouraged by the Food and Drug Administration.

Because raw flour has not been treated to eliminate microbes, eating uncooked flour poses some of the same hazards as eating other raw foods, like E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and other bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Allow two cups of the flour to cool fully, then you can use it safely for recipes or crafting projects where you may be swallowing. Flour right out of the bag may not look like a raw food, but until cooked or baked, it should be considered as such.
Keep raw foods out of other foods when baking, and keep in mind how easy it is for flour to get all over your kitchen because it is so powdery and powdery. Unless you are unconscious for an extremely long time, you cannot treat flour as if it were raw food.
