Can Teflon Go In The Dishwasher?
Generally, you should not put non-stick coated cookware in a dishwasher unless the manufacturer has stated that it is dishwasher friendly. This is because overtime, the non stick coating can be damaged by the dishwasher. But, Teflon coated pans can be put in a dishwasher as long as its from a trustworthy manufacturer.
Not all Teflon cookware is dishwasher safe, but that’s not because of the Teflon coating. Regardless of whether the pan is Teflon coated or not, the manufacturer’s instructions should be read before using it in the dishwasher. Some Teflon cookware may contain aluminum, which will not stand up to washing in the dishwasher.
Follow these tips to reduce the exposure of Teflon pans to harsh conditions when using the dishwasher. The abrasive cleaners and harsh cleaners used in dishwashers can cause Teflon cookware to wear out over time. If you use dishwashing detergent with harsh chemicals, it can ruin the look.

Discoloration is caused by abrasive cleaning chemicals on dishwasher soap. The heat and harsh chemicals in dishwasher detergent will wear down the ceramic coating faster than you probably want. Another reason for non-stick coating failure in a dishwasher is that the abrasive chemicals found in dishwasher detergent leach moisture out of the dishes. Dishwashers use high heat and strong detergents to produce super-clean cookware that will wear down the coating of most non-stick pans.
How to Wash Teflon pans? | Things to Use | Why? |
Wash by hands only | soft sponge, water | Overtime, dishwashing can destroy its peel or coating |
Use only non-abrasive cleaners | Mild soap | Because mild products would not affect the surface of the pan. |
Always wipe down the outside of your pan | Damp and smooth cloth only | This helps remove any residue from previous uses without scratching it. |
Non-stick cookware should be washed and dried by hand as the dishwasher can wear down the non-stick coating over time. If you buy a good non-stick set, washing your hands should be easy and you can put the dishwasher aside for most of the time. If your dishwasher uses a chlorine-based cleaning formula, you can ditch it entirely and wash your non-stick pans by hand.
Over time, the dishwashing process can destroy the non-stick coating, causing it to peel off during cooking and destroy the non-stick coating. The truth is that one or two turns in the dishwasher won’t damage the non-stick coating, but frequent dishwashing can damage the non-stick coating, even if it’s labeled as dishwasher safe. If you don’t clean your non-stick pan after every use, but simply wipe it down with a paper towel, food residue will still stick to the pan, even if you can’t see it.
Most homeowners forget to season their nonstick pans or accidentally throw them in the dishwasher, which ruins the delicate surface. If you have fairly new nonstick cookware, you can wash it in hot water in the dishwasher. Although copper pans are durable, we do not recommend washing them in the dishwasher.
Putting aluminum cookware in the dishwasher can cause unwanted corrosion and quickly tarnish the pan. Very hot water in dishwashers can stain the aluminum surface, and harsh dishwasher detergents can tarnish. The harshness of dishwasher detergents can remove the natural oils that prevent wooden utensils and cutting boards from drying out. Very hot water and harsh dishwashing detergents can damage acrylic sheets and other utensils, cause small cracks and wash away anything left on them.
Scratched dishes are more susceptible to damage in the harsh environment of a dishwasher. If your dishwasher makes noise and shakes while washing, it increases the chance of dish damage. Run a rinse cycle if you are not going to run the dishwasher immediately, as prolonged contact with products containing salt, acid or sulfur (eggs, mayonnaise and seafood) can damage the finish.
If the manufacturer claims the plastic is dishwasher safe, place it on the top shelf where washing is more gentle. You might think that you can throw any old plastic in the dishwasher, but you need to be careful. If your cast iron cookware is not labeled “dishwasher safe”, do not put plastic items in the dishwasher. A hot dishwasher can warp or damage some plastic parts, and squeezing plastic items into small spaces can also warp, so while you can put them in the dishwasher, they should be on the top shelf.
Non-stick pots and pans Unless the manufacturer specifically states that the product is dishwasher safe, do not put non-stick pots in the dishwasher. Every set on the list is dishwasher safe with no discoloration or flaking, so you don’t have to worry about that. Keep pans clean and non-stick, and wash them thoroughly in warm, soapy water after each use. Simply wash your pots with warm, soapy water and a dishwashing sponge after each use to remove food and oil residue.
In the dishwasher, the layer of seasoning will wash off, and the iron underneath will rust. It takes a long time to create a non-stick surface on cast iron, and dishwashing detergent will wash it off and leave the pan vulnerable to rust. Your dishwasher won’t damage the cast iron itself, but it will remove the layers of seasoning that protect your pan from rust and make it virtually non-stick. The liners are actually dishwasher safe and won’t peel or scratch, so if your favorite pan ends up in the machine, you’ll be fine.

When it comes to lead, we highly recommend instead of using the dishwasher to clean copper pans, it’s best to wash them by hand with your choice of dishwashing detergent (gentle is the key) and hot water. Other non-stick pans, such as Teflon or ceramic coated pans, should be washed by hand in warm water using a good quality dish detergent and non-abrasive sponges. Ideally, Teflon pans should be cleaned with a soft sponge, warm water, and mild soap.
Original Teflon pans are dishwasher safe and can be placed in the dishwasher without damaging the surface of these pans. Even if you don’t mind spoiling the look of fragile disposable aluminum pans, don’t put them in the dishwasher, as they can leave marks on nearby items as they move around during the wash.
Stainless steel Yes Stainless steel pans with heat-resistant plastic handles are suitable, but should only be washed in the dishwasher occasionally as the detergent may weaken the coating. If you combine abrasive cleaning with high temperature water, the outer surface of the cookware will quickly deteriorate.
Can Teflon be washed?
Wipe the Teflon surface clean using a soft nylon scrubber, sponge, or paper towel dampened with a few drops of dishwashing soap. Wipe down the inside of the pan and the outer bottom and the panhandle. Rinse the pan thoroughly to remove any soapy residue.
Is scratched Teflon toxic?
When Teflon cookware is scratched, little pieces of the coating may fall loose. The chips, according to the Food and Drug Administration, pose no health risk when they pass through the body. Teflon is processed with PFOA.
Can Teflon coating cause cancer?
Researchers believed that all Teflon-branded products are PFOA-free since 2013. There is some hypothesis that suggests a link between PFOA and cancer but no proven link between Teflon and cancer.
