Can Sour Cream Go Bad?
Like other dairy products, sour cream can go bad after some time. Unopened sour cream can be kept for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator after its sell-by date. However, once opened it can last for up to 7 to 9 days in the refrigerator.
You can still use spoiled sour cream as long as it is not opened, but only if it is three weeks past itssell-by date or use-by-date, and it has been properly stored in a refrigerator. In general, if the sour cream is unopened, it is safe to keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks past its best-by date, when used. If the sour creams best by sell-by date is being talked about, unopened sour cream is safe for 1-2 weeks past its best by date, provided that it is stored correctly in the fridge at or below 40 degrees F.

When we are talking about the sour cream, it may still remain safe to use for several days beyond the date printed on it provided it was stored correctly. The product is already acidic, so chances are that it will maintain its quality for one week, sometimes even two weeks past its expiration date. So, you need to be sure you are keeping your sour cream in a tight container, and store your sour cream in the refrigerator, if you wish to use it after its expiration date.

You must keep the sour cream containers in one of the shelves in your fridge rather than on the doors because the doors of your refrigerator experience many temperature fluctuations which may ruin the quality of sour cream. To help prolong the shelf life of purchased sour cream, grab the tub toward the end of a trip around the supermarket, and consider taking a cooler with you in the car to maintain the temperature levels during warmer days.
If a tub of sour cream has been sitting on a countertop at room temperature for a few hours, bacteria may be growing, and it is unsafe to eat, regardless of its best-by date. Sanitary expired sour cream can be safe for 1 – 3 weeks without opening, but this is assuming that you kept your sour cream refrigerated at 40 degrees F. for that whole time. Unopened, your sour cream may last as long as three weeks past its best-by date, provided you store it in ideal conditions, but once you have opened it, you will want to use it within seven to 10 days. The sell-by date is so that stores know when they need to be sold out in order to give consumers enough time to use it before spoiling.

If stored at the refrigerator door, which is where it is kept coldest, unopened packages can spoil a week past their sell-by date. In most cases, a purchased item will remain fresh for several days more, and when stored properly, it can still be used seven to 10 days after its sold-by date. Product stored in this manner will not last as long as if packed in a sealed container. If a container comes with just a foil seal, consider moving it to an airtight container, particularly if you plan on keeping it in the refrigerator for more than a few days.
If you see signs of mold, or any dark spots on the surface or neck of the container, that is clearly bad. There are colored spots on the surface of cream, or the container lining of cream — it is mold. The mold might be invisible all over the container, even though you see just the colored spots on the surface of the cream. Do not think that you can just scrape any mould off the top and use the rest, it could have spread all over the container and was invisible.
It is recommended not to scrape the mold and use the other issues, as it is possible there is spreading beyond what is visible to the naked eye. We would NOT recommend eating foods that have visible mold growing on them, because some moulds produce mycotoxin, which can make you really sick.
If using original packaging, particularly large containers, you may want to put a sheet of plastic wrap right over the top of the sour cream before placing your lid to help it seal well and keep it stored. Next time, before you place your containers into storage, try to make the product surface more uniform so that it is less likely to separate ([DA]). A spoilt product will develop the distinctive unpleasant, sharp, mouldy, biting, rancid, or stinky odor.
For less noticeable ones, take a big sniff and see if the smell has turned more acidic than originally, or perhaps it is biting. A smell that is sours combined with one of these other factors below will definitely let you know whether it is safe or not to eat.
Even if it looks and smells fine, you need to be aware that harmful germs begin multiplying in this food after sitting at more than an hour at room temperature over 40F (4.5C). Yeasts and molds continue to thrive in this product when you store it between 40-90 F (4.5-32 C).
It depends on several factors, including type of sour cream without opening, processing and pasteurization method, date of packing, container type, location to be stored, and its exposure to heat.
Sour cream has good amount of the necessary minerals such as carbohydrates, fat, and proteins, in a decent amount, making it an ideal ingredient for different dishes. The fat-free version is not suitable for cooking and baking, though you can use it as a topping on baked potatoes or a cold dip. The white is perfectly fine to eat, and you can drain off any liquid, or stir it into food with a clean, dry spoon. The reason for this is that the process of producing lactic acid through influence from a specific bacterium is called acidification.
I know it is easier when making salads to just use a spoon that you already own rather than reaching for a new one, but it is important to not get lazy here.
Different producers have their own standards of fermenting, processing, and pasteurizing methods, and they will not make the same tart dairy milk that has the same density, flavor, or even consistency.
Can you get sick from expired sour cream?
Any dairy product that expires or goes bad make a negative effect on your health. The same goes for sour cream, you can fall sick if it isn’t preserved properly or goes bad. Using expired sour cream can lead you to food poisoning easily,
Is sour cream still good if it’s watery?
It is fine to eat if the sour cream on top is a touch runny. Throw it out if there is a large quantity of water in it, it stinks sourer than customary, or there are some other indicators of rotting. So better to preserve it correctly.
How long does sour cream last opened in the fridge?
You should consider the product to keep fresh for around 2 weeks after unpacking the container as a general rule. You may use your best judgment to guarantee the product’s freshness by smell, taste, and looking at it.
