Can Smoked Salmon Go Bad?
Of course, it can go bad. Generally, store-bought smoked salmon can last up to 2 to 3 days date past its expiration date if the package is yet to be opened. If the package is opened, it should be used within 5 to 6 days.
Let the opened salmon thaw in hot or cold water (depending on how much time you have). Instead, try eating thawed salmon. My advice: if you have a lot of salmon, wait until it’s harvested before defrosting it.
The downside is that if you’re going to eat salmon, you’ll need to thaw it first. During the smoking process, salmon dehydrates, so it weighs much less than it would if it were fresh. Smoked fish can be frozen, but we do not recommend doing this, as it deteriorates significantly in the freezer.

Vacuum-packed should be wrapped in greaseproof paper or aluminum and stored in the refrigerator for up to ten days to keep it fresh. IF you store smoked fish in the refrigerator without vacuum packaging, it will be safe to eat for up to 3 weeks. You can store your fish for up to three weeks if it has been vacuum-packed and refrigerated properly. Once vacuum-packed salmon has thawed, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days.
If you refrigerate it right away and store it properly, the fish will last about 5 days. If you buy packaged salmon but decide to eat it later, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to seven days. For example, if the package says that smoked salmon can be stored without opening for 2-3 weeks, you can store for another 2-3 days. Unopened smoked salmon will usually keep about 2-3 weeks past its expiration date, and once opened, it will keep for about a week when stored properly in the refrigerator at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
|Fish||Last for about 5 days(refrigerator)|
|Packaged salmon||Last for up to 7 days|
|Unopened smoked salmon||Last for 2 to 3 weeks|
|Opened smoked salmon||Last for 1 week|
|Fresh salmon||Last for 6 to 9 months(Frozen)|
|Thawed smoked salmon||Last for 3 to 4 days before 4(Refrigerator)|
Yes – Once opened, smoked salmon is generally safe to eat for 1 week, even if the best before or expiration date on the package has expired. When stored properly, unopened canned salmon usually retains its best quality for about 3-5 years, although when stored properly, it usually remains safe to use afterwards. Once purchased, salmon can be refrigerated for 1 or 2 days – the “sell” date on the package may expire during this storage period, but salmon will remain safe to use past the expiration date if properly stored.
Fresh salmon can be stored indefinitely when frozen, but will be of higher quality when used within 6-9 months. To keep salmon fresh and tasty, keep it in the freezer and eat within two to three months. If you want to taste the best of salmon, eat it before the expiration date.
If this salmon is approaching the label date or is a day or two past due, try it before serving. After the expiration date, expired smoked salmon can be used if it has already been properly stored in the freezer (before the expiration date). According to the USDA, you should consume smoked salmon before the expiration date, but whether you eat properly stored smoked salmon (all the time stored at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit), i.e. 2 days after consumption – the date depends on mostly from your decision (you have to do a sensory evaluation of the smoked salmon). It is recommended that you always store smoked salmon on the refrigerator shelf and not on the refrigerator door, as a lot of temperature changes can occur on the refrigerator door, which can degrade the quality of smoked salmon.
A pack of smoked salmon thawed in the refrigerator can be stored for another 3-4 days in the refrigerator before use; a packet of smoked salmon thawed in the microwave or in cold water should be used immediately. Spread the smoked salmon out on a baking sheet (be careful not to touch the pieces you want to keep separate) and freezing them for about an hour or two beforehand will help keep the meat intact so it doesn’t crumble or squash in weird ways. when it comes to vacuum. If your smoked fish is still vacuum-packed and you plan to cook it a couple of days after defrosting, you can freeze it as is.
While smoked fish, such as salmon or herring, can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days after their expiration date, fresh fish should be discarded before 24 hours. If you freeze smoked fish, it will keep for several months, depending on the fish you keep. On the other hand, smoked fish tastes the same as unfrozen fish, so if you eat it within a two or three month safety period, freezing won’t have any effect on the salmon’s taste. Above the latter, the quality drops, but you can still eat smoked salmon because frozen smoked salmon will keep in good condition indefinitely.

If you buy a pack of smoked salmon from the grocery store, you have about a week before it begins to curdle; assuming this is longer than the shelf life of fresh raw salmon, which is only good for a few days in a regular refrigerator. Of course, salmon keeps well most of the time within a few days of its expiration date, depending on its overall shelf life. Regular salmon should be consumed within a week of opening, regardless of expiration date.
Store opened salmon in original packaging; wrap it in cling film or put it in a self-closing plastic bag to prevent it from drying out. You can freeze spoiled salmon separately if it is not already open, or divide it into portions and freeze in freezer bags. Smoked salmon, trout, mackerel, and other smoked fish can last up to three weeks in the refrigerator if the package is properly packaged and stored in a cool place.
What happens if you eat spoiled smoked salmon?
Any food that is consumed after it passes its expiry date or seems spoiled can cause some health issues, just like bad smoked salmon including fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
How long does smoked salmon keep in the refrigerator?
Cold-smoked salmon have a short shelf life of 1 to 2 weeks in the refrigerator and one month in the freezer. Because Listeria bacteria may survive at low temperatures, the storage duration is another important element in their multiplication.
What does salmon smell like if it’s bad?
If you’re not sure whether your fish is rotten, remember the old adage: “When in uncertainty, throw it out.” If the salmon smells sour, rotten, fishy, or like ammonia, it’s gone bad. If it smells like this when it’s raw, it’ll probably stink much worse when cooked.
