Can pecans get spoilt?

Pecans can get bad after a while as they contain a large percentage of oil. At a colder temperature, you can expect pecans to last longer. If properly stored in a cool and dry place like a cabinet in a pantry they can last 6 – 12 months.

Pecans can easily spoil if not stored properly, so you need to know how to store them if you want to get the most out of them. Pecans should be stored in an airtight container, such as an airtight plastic bag, at low temperatures to extend their shelf life. Pecans can also be refrigerated in an airtight container for about nine months; shelled for 6 to 12 months, but make sure to keep them in a good moisture-proof container. Pecans will keep for several months at 70 degrees; about 18 months in the refrigerator, and 2 years or more at 0 degrees.

Unshelled pecans can last up to a year if stored in a cool, dry place, but unshelled pecans are usually less than six months old, so you’ll need to watch them more closely. Store peeled pecans in a cool, dry place—they will keep for 6 to 12 months, or longer if refrigerated. Shelled pecans will keep for about 6 months when stored in a cool, dry and dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. You can also store unshelled pecans in the refrigerator, and if properly stored in plastic freezer bags or vacuum-sealed, they will keep for about 2 years or more.

Inshell pecans keep for 2 years before they go bad if properly stored in the freezer under the right conditions. You can easily get several years out of pecans if you store them properly in a cool, dark and dry environment where they won’t go rancid. Technically, candied pecans won’t spoil for more than two months in the refrigerator. You can store toasted pecans in a zip-top bag in the refrigerator for up to 1 month, or in the refrigerator for up to 3 months. To extend the shelf life of pecans, always store them in their shells and refrigerate for good storage.

Make sure you have an airtight food container that you can put your candied pecans in. As far as the freezer goes, zip-top bags are the best option, as you can squeeze out excess air and minimize the oxygen exposure of the candied pecans.
