Do Hazelnuts Expire?

Like most dry fruits, hazelnuts go bad over time. They will eventually turn rancid if stored improperly or for too long. Once spoiled, hazelnuts take on a pungent taste. For unshelled hazelnuts, the average shelf life is usually up to a year, and for shelled ones, it’s around 3–4 months.

Unlike the salt, sugar, and flour that I store at home, storing nuts without spoiling is a little tricky. When buying in bulk, you need to separate and store the nuts to preserve them before you can eat them. The most important aspect of storing nuts is to keep the oils in the nuts as fresh as possible to prevent them from going bad. Hazelnuts are not necessary to store in the refrigerator, as the high fat content of these nuts will prevent them from spoiling quickly.

While the hazelnuts are probably edible, they won’t taste good and have probably started to go rancid. You won’t be able to eat raw hazelnuts the same way, but if you want to bake them or add them to your recipes, then they’ll do. If your nuts aren’t as flavorful and crunchy as you’d like, you can always try roasting them.

Roasted hazelnuts don’t keep as long as regular hazelnuts, but they can keep for about a year in the freezer and up to six months in the refrigerator. Hazelnuts can be stored for a long time, especially if you collect heavy nuts that appear full when examined. Out of their shells, hazelnuts can still be useful after about three to four months.

Inshell hazelnuts can last anywhere from six months to a year if stored in a cool, dry place. Until the nuts are shelled, hazelnuts can be stored at room temperature for several months. Storing unopened packages of hazelnuts in the pantry or at room temperature should be the last option if you’re short on cold storage space. You can store unopened packages of hazelnuts in a cool, dry place, such as a pantry or kitchen cabinet. If you live in an area with high humidity or it’s hot outside, transfer the hazelnuts to a dry place, such as an oven container or a ziplock bag, before placing the hazelnuts in the refrigerator to keep them from getting moldy. Remember that you will need to place the shelled hazelnuts in a freezer bag or resealable container before refrigeration or freezing them.

If you want your nut butter to last longer, consider purchasing a vacuum packaging machine so you can keep it for 12 months. Hazelnut oil will keep for about 3-4 weeks in the refrigerator and one month in the freezer. If you want to keep hazelnuts longer, put them in the freezer, where they will keep fresh for up to a year. Unlike other nuts, they do not need to be refrigerated once opened, but you should still store them in an airtight container with a fresh date.

Roasted walnuts keep up to 3-4 months in the refrigerator and up to a year when frozen. Peeled hazelnuts can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer for up to five months. Hazelnuts should be placed in a place in the refrigerator or freezer at a constant temperature. Peeled hazelnuts can last up to 3 months when properly stored at room temperature.

The reason why people often choose vacuum-packed nuts over freezing is because they have the same shelf life in both cases. Freezing walnuts to keep them fresh is completely different from freezing other foods where the freezing process can change their flavor and texture.

If you want hazelnuts to last longer than they can, you must freeze them by peeling the skin off the hazelnuts and then placing them in a freezer bag. Because the nuts are no longer protected by their shells, nuts last longer if placed in an airtight container before storage. In general, whether you have nuts in shell or not, in order for them not to go rancid, always make sure that your nuts are stored in a cool and dark place, away from any exposure to heat. Hazelnut is probably safe for most people in food. But some people are sensitive to consuming hazelnuts and have had severe allergic reactions, including life-threatening breathing problems such as anaphylaxis. It is suggested not to use hazelnuts if you are allergic to nuts. Hazelnuts maintain quality for at least a year in the refrigerator and up to two years in the freezer
