Can Flax Seeds Go Bad?
Flaxseeds can go rancid if kept for a very long time. Generally, the whole flaxseeds can last up to several weeks past the expiration date if stored in the refrigerator while for ground flaxseeds, it is best to use them within the expiration date or for most, a week past the date.
Ground flax seeds will spoil within a week if stored at room temperature, so use them within 3-4 days. In general, whole flax seeds can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to a year. If stored properly, whole flaxseeds will keep for about a year, and ground flaxseeds will last about six months. If you have whole flax seeds, they will keep for several months, especially if you keep them in the refrigerator (more on that later).

At room temperature, whole flaxseeds can be stored six months after the expiration date printed on the package, while ground flaxseeds have a shelf life of about a week after the stated expiration date. Storing flax seeds in the freezer can help them stay fresh longer by extending the life of ground flax seeds by up to three months. Storing whole flax seeds in the refrigerator or freezer will prolong their freshness. Some flaxseed brands may recommend storing their flaxseed products in the refrigerator or freezer to keep them fresh.
