Can Butter Go Bad?
Butter can go bad but not as quickly as other dairy products. Unsalted butter if unopened can lasts for a month past its best-by date but if opened can retain quality for only 8 weeks while unopened salted butter can be kept for up to 2 months past the date and for 12 weeks after opening.
You can safely taste the oil to see if it has gone bad, but drinking a lot of expired oil, especially moldy, can make you feel nauseous. Refrigerated butter will still go bad about a month after its expiration date if stored in an airtight refrigerator. Thus, when stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, the oil will keep for about a month past its expiration date.
