Can Brown Sugar Go Bad
Brown sugar does go bad after two years of the opening date. Also, a best-by date printed by the manufacturers suggests the same. If keeping brown sugar for longer, store it in an air-tight container without contact with moisture or bugs.
While brown sugar won’t spoil when properly stored, it’s best to use it before its expiration date (if at all). While the original packaging has a shelf life of about 18 months, the longest shelf life is in an airtight container, such as a Mylar bag with an oxygen scavenger. Storing brown sugar in an airtight container is the best way to extend its shelf life and keep it fresh for a long time. As long as the sugar is in an airtight container and kept out of air, moisture, and insects, it can be stored almost indefinitely.

Storing brown sugar in an airtight container or plastic bag can be critical to keeping it protected for years. Like other types and grades of sugar, brown sugar can be stored indefinitely as long as it is not exposed to heat, excess air, and insects. Brown sugar is considered “shelf-stable” by the USDA, meaning it can be stored at room temperature and will stay good indefinitely, unless moisture or unwanted insects have entered the bag. If you don’t store it properly, what used to be a soft, fluffy bag of brown sugar granules will harden into a thick brown lump that could break windows.
Hardened sugar is difficult to use, but can be softened and does not spoil. This will save you the trouble of breaking large sugar cubes. If you need to soften the sugar right away, you can break it up with a fork or an electric mixer. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the hard sugar in an oven bowl and heat it in the oven, checking every two minutes and mashing with a fork, until the sugar is soft.

Put a slice of fresh bread into the bag/container where you store the sugar and let it sit for a day or two. Separate paper towels from sugar with plastic wrap. When stored in an airtight container with one of these softeners, every time you open the container, the sugar inside will be as soft as when you bought it. If air gets into the container, the sugar will solidify because it can absorb a lot of moisture from the air.
An airtight seal will prevent moisture from entering the sugar package and entry of insects or pests in the pantry into the original package. You can store a freshly opened bag of sugar in a wet, sand-like state indefinitely. Powdered sugar usually has a shelf life of about 2 years after purchase when stored in its original packaging, however, powdered sugar can be stored indefinitely when stored properly. Although white sugar may expire, it does not spoil and, if stored properly, can be stored well beyond the expiration date printed on the original packaging.
It’s best to use powdered sugar within two years of purchase, as it loses its fluffy texture. Sugar has a shelf life of 2 years as it tends to clump/harden in granulated sugar and crystallize in syrups and honey, but is still safe to eat. Companies typically set the shelf life of most sugars to be around two years.

Manufacturers are required by law to label sugar packets with a two-year shelf life. Of course, there is usually a date on the label, but that’s just an indicator of how long the product quality should remain at its best. The “use by” date tells you the date by which sugar must be used for the best quality, which is important when using it to make things like sugar cookies.
All types of sugar can undergo some changes over time, even when stored properly, making it less desirable to eat or use, but it won’t become poisonous or rancid like other foods. If stored improperly, sugar can harden, absorb the flavor of nearby foods, or in some cases even form mold. Proper storage will always extend the shelf life of your sugar and ensure it stays in top condition.
If the brown sugar is very VERY hard and won’t soften to its original consistency no matter what you do, you can turn it into a liquid sweetener instead of throwing it away. As mentioned above, take the sugar out a few hours before using it and then place it on top of the apple slice inside the sugar container. If you use sugar regularly, get a good sugar container.
The moisture in sugar will not cause spoilage anyway, because the sugar content is too high for organisms to grow. This simply means that the sugar has lost some of its moisture and its softness can be restored. Fortunately for me, large lumps of sugar formed due to loss of moisture are not a reason to throw it away, and its former consistency is easily restored.
After about two years, many types of sugar begin to show aging problems, making them less than ideal for use and consumption. Is it okay to eat expired brown sugar?
Brown sugar goes bad in very rare cases. It may catch bugs or would not have been stored properly otherwise it has an indefinite life or till the labeled date. The shelf life of brown sugar can be maximized by proper storage.
Does brown sugar grow mold?
Mold usually takes place in dry textured eatables. Since brown sugar is moist, the mold can’t grow there. In case the sugar is exposed to a humid temperature then the mold is likely to grow.
Why is my brown sugar moving?
To make brown sugar we have to coat white sugar with molasses or treacle syrup. when it becomes soft, the reason behind is because the syrup is fresh. The fresh molasses permit sugar crystals to move around each other. But when it is exposed to air, the molasses start to dry out and hence moisture vaporizes.
