For snakes better equipped for eating eggs, such as the Royal Python and Rattlesnake, it will not be a big deal. It is known that smaller snakes will also try to eat eggs from many smaller animals. Although many other species of snakes do eat birds eggs as well as those of other reptiles, no other species is so specialised that it only eats birds eggs, and fasts during bird breeding seasons. Many snakes, which normally hunt smaller animals, sometimes will eat eggs if they are lucky enough to encounter a nest in the wild.
Unlike many of the other rattlesnakes, which cannot eat eggs, this snake does enjoy birds eggs as part of its normal diet. Some snakes, such as East African Egg-Eating Snakes, will eat eggs exclusively, and others, such as boas and rattlesnakes, cannot digest eggs. In addition to egg-eating snakes usually rodent-based diets, snakes such as constrictor venomous snakes, which cannot consume eggs, may offer a similar type of enriched diet.
Egg-eating snakes are arboreal species, spending much of their time hunting for birds nests above ground. Golden tree snakes are fast moving, they are generally carnivorous of lizards, small rodents, and bats, and are known for feeding on insects and birds eggs.
Being nocturnal, golden tree snakes may surprise their bird victims, which are asleep at that moment, or left eggs exposed by the birds victims. Generally, the snakes will not sit on the eggs to give their parents care, as they are delicate and sitting on them could prove hazardous.
Some snakes are oviparous (laying eggs), others are viviparous (having living young), and yet others are oviviviparous, in which eggs hatch within the mothers body, and young are born alive with no placental attachment. There are some snakes that can only lay as few as 1 egg, or only have one live birth per three years. Many snakes will consume eggs on occasion — particularly in the wild — but not all snakes need to consume eggs in captivity.
